I like it quite a bit. I'm using the semi synthetic blend. It seems to start easier in the winter than it has before - I used to just run Pennzoil Conventional all year, but the cold harsh winters has been enough for me to learn better than to make my truck suffer rough cold starts. Last winter when it was running Pennzoil Conventional and temps were below zero (*F), when I went to start it, it would shutter at 500 rpm's for a few seconds before revving up to its normal rpm range. But now, with the Kendall semi-synthetic in it, cold starts are no longer a problem.

The job my son is working on is 61.7 miles one way. The last time he added a qt. of Valvoline MaxLife he had driven about 1150 miles. After putting almost 1230 miles in the last 2 weeks he had to add another qt. of Valvoline MaxLife. Some might say that's a lot of oil in such a short period of time, and at that mileage. But, the Valvoline MaxLife is working, and better than the Super Tech High Mileage oil. He was having to add a qt. of Super Tech High Mileage every 1K miles. And, with conventional oil, a qt. about every 800-900 miles.
I will say that Valvoline MaxLife is doing its job, and works!

BTW, his company has him starting at a new job next week. It's only 22 miles one way.

To be honest, IMO, I think that the reason older vehicles burn so much oil (when using High Mileage oil) is that, because [generally speaking] additives are the first thing to be burnt off, and high mileage oils use more (yes, of a specific type of the many types) of additives, and so the makeup of the container may have less base stock in comparison to its oil/additive ratio. I may be wrong, as it is just a hunch. And if you prove me otherwise, I would totally admit to being wrong if I understood why. Anyways, to get to the point, I'd stay away from Valvoline's conventional Max Life. Go for the Semi-Syn Max Life.

I am not a basher of any brand, and I normally just go for the best deal, but (just because) I thought you might like to know that you can get oil for great prices on Amazon, plus the filter (and normally it's all free shipping [at least in the USA].

GG, you're the 2nd one to state that. I have also read a lot about Valvoline MaxLife. People that have used it think it was Heaven sent by Unicorns. And, I state that in a positive way.


Valvoline and it's counterparts are pretty much all I'll use anymore. Exception is Mobil 1 and pennzoil, but the V is my número uno. For these reasons.

My son buys 10W40 Valvoline MaxLife syn-blend from Walmart for $16.27 in the 5 qt. container. I sent him (2) coupons for $5 off each 5qt. container, back in November. That made the deal even sweeter.

My wife drives an 03 Corolla with 122,000 + on it and it burns little oil - we use Quaker State Ultimate Durability in it. I drive an 04 Rav4 with 214,000 + on it and it used to burn oil at about your rate till I changed the PCV valve and switched to Valvoline MaxLife. Now it burns about 1.5 qrts. in 3000 miles. Runs like a top and I am a definitely going to keep using Valvoline MaxLife. ( I did try Havoline HM in it to see if it was just the PCV valve and the Valvoline MaxLife was more effective). There is probably other oils that will do the job like Valvoline MaxLife, but as for me, I will stick with Valvoline MaxLife.

Haha, you know something... IDK why I linked the Valvoline MaxLife 10w40 to Amazon, lol, because in that case, Walmart does sell it for much cheaper. Oh well, I must've been a little tired at the time of the posting haha. Yah, my dad recently bought it at Walmart for about 16 bucks (Valvoline MaxLife 10w40 High Mileage Semi-Syn [Walmart]). He didn't have/use any coupons though...

(Warning, slightly unrelated and long read ahead): On a side note, unfortunately, the vehicle he'd put it in [that had a bad engine to begin with] recently just seized up. It was a 1999 Ford Escort... We found out by the mechanic that those 2.0L (not the zetec one, the standard one) from that generation had weak valve heads --- which lead to loss of compression, etc., and thus causing the engine to literally make cylinders 2 and 4 stop moving altogether. What's even funnier (not) is that when he bought the car (had around 100k miles), unsurprisingly, the previous owner had not tuned it as it should have been, and once my dad hit 150k the timing belt/chain (can't remember which it is) went bad - he went to start it up and 'snap crackle pop' (it shattered the pistons). The replacement engine (yah, what a great idea, replace an engine of a '99 Escort) would have been fine, but the goof-ball guys that put it in messed it up, and it, too blew. So the third engine (I know what your thinking here, lol), the most recent one, lasted for a good 80k miles until the weak heads killed it. All in all, that Escort did quite well though, despite a slippery transmission past 230k. The car was finally put to rest with like 260k miles on it, and throughout its whole life made 34mpg highway.

A few days ago my dad and I went out and bought a 1998 Buick LeSabre (about 98k miles on it) for a pretty good deal under KBB. I think my dad will be happy with this car. The 3.8L V6 (3800 series II) is a solid engine as far as I've heard. And for such a big car to get 30mpg highway

... Ha, well, is pretty awesome. Also, when we bought it, the dealer had just gotten it in as a trade in so they'd not had time to even change the oil or anything yet (but that made it cheaper for us to buy haha), so I today I went to Walmart and bought something that I'd never have bought before I was a BITOGer - a 5 quart jug of SuperTech High Mileage 5w30. I thought, hey, for under 15 bucks, why not. I bought some STP blue bottle additive (for peace of mind, haha) and a Purolator filter, too.

Those old 3.8L GM motors are hard to kill. My 94 Bonneville seems to really like it's current fill of MaxLife Blend - it's the most quiet it's ever been on cold winter starts. Also gets great highway mileage - about 28mpg if I keep it under 70mph. A 98 LeSabre is a sweet car.

Yah my dad drives a little slower, usually between 55 and 60, and he gets like 30mpg out of it

I just did a OCI with QS Defy in my sons 2003 Monte Carlo SS(81K miles)... I'll let everyone know how his 3800 V6 likes the new oil. So far its quieter then the previously used Mobil 1 Extended Performance which was in use for 5K miles...

I've been looking for a known oil that helps slow down oil consumption for my brother's 2002 f150.


he drives roughly 400 miles a week (yes i know its not an ideal commuting vehicle and I don't wanna get into why he doesn't have something more economical at this time)

I've been using 5w20, either valvoline or mobil or Mystik etc. this last oil change i only had 4 quarts of valvoline left so i used those and for the remainder oil needed i used Shell 5w30.
that was about 2 weeks ago and i checked the oil today and it was about a half quart low.

Now should I switch to 5w30 all together or even a 10w30? I have a bit of Formula shell stock piled from past sales from Menards.

I also have some Chevron Delo 10w30 HDEO and of course several other varietys of Valvoline durablend and maxlife, and some Pennzoil Ultra and Quaker State Ultimate Durability, yes I have the oil hoard sickness. I took a picture of all the oil i had last year and it was quite a bit.

Anyways so yeah what oil do you recommend to help slow consumption.

I see you guys favor Defy as well, I've never used it, perhaps I should give that a try next time or I'll just run with the shell for now or try the Chevron 10w30 next time.

If the engine is a 4.6 or 5.4 I would recommend Valvoline MaxLife 5w20. If it's a 4.2 Valvoline MaxLife 5w30 will be just fine.
