This is the first UOA on this car that has 3900 miles on it. Does this report look about normal for a car with these low miles? Tin is mentioned in the comments and I don't know what if anything this means.

Everything looks fine right now. The engine is still breaking in so the wear metals will look higher but appear to be pretty low forthe mileage. Fuel Dilution is still acceptable to me and viscosity is just slightly out of range for a 5W-30 oil, probably mostly because of the fuel. TBN, Oxidation, and Nitration are low and show you can extend the oil change interval if you want.

I'm guessing you changed the oil at 700 miles? So this is the 2nd oil change for this vehicle? That would explain the low metals for such a low mileage car. Even still, it does look more broken in than I expected for 3900 miles.

Yes that's correct. I was going to change the oil at around 1000 miles but then we decided to take the car on a long trip through the Sierra's so I changed it before we left. The factory fill was 0-20 but I will be using 5-30 and probably changing it out at 4500 mile OCI's.

Agreed 👍 💯

Nice.
What oil is being used now? Your 1.6 really likes the Valvoline Advanced.

Your next UOA may not look as good, should your 4.5k OCI have an abundancy of city driving. Be wary of that and be prepared to shorten the OCI because of it. The Korean TGDIs run dirty in stop & go situations.

I went with Valvoline 5-30 Restore & Protect and an OEM filter at this oil change. This car will see more city driving than our other car so maybe I should check it around 4000 miles?

I'm not in any camp / group that would adhere to using VRP so early in the engine's age. But that's just me - my opinion. I suppose you could, just for preventative maintenance reasons and even use it for the lifetime of your ownership. But I wouldn't -not this early in engine life..

I replied, thinking you may continue with the Valvoline Advanced or jump into Valvoline EP. 4k would be a good OCI timetable on your 'now' mostly city-driven 1.6 TGDI. Many of us here at BITOG preach short OCIs with the Korean four cylinder TGDIs.

In any regard, be sure to keep that engine relatively clean while you own it and keep all oil change receipts, including date, brand viscosity / grade and mileage numbers on the receipts. In case of any engine troubles, dealerships may question you in regards to having them. You don't have to produce receipts, unless they prove you neglected or abused the engine.

They cannot deny you warranty work otherwise. Many folks driving these Korean-mades don't seem to realize that. They just cannot make you produce receipts out of the blue. They must identify to you a good reason, like proving to you that you should have been adhering to Severe Service Mileage recommendations. BTW..... I own a Kia and a Hyundai...... five and six years old and religiously did 3k OCIs until I recently fed these engines Amsoil and HPL.

This will be the first time I extend to an at-least 5k OCI with either. I changed to improve wear protection, not to seek extended OCIs. I have no bills at home and can easily afford to buy expensive oils that protect engine metallurgy better every 5k. But I won't discuss that opinion with anyone here inside your thread.

Here's hoping you have three nice Holidays coming right ahead of us. Cheers!

Um, why not do a UOA and use that to decide whether fuel dilution calls for an oil change?

I don't know if it's true but I've read that the Kia/Hyundai engines can be prone to burning oil as they get some miles on them. My thinking was if the R & P could keep the rings clean right from the get go we might be able to avoid that problem with our car.

I am pretty confident that using the 5w30 will be more help than the brand of oil you use. Although that oil seems to be pretty good from the testing that has been done on it. Looks like it is a very good cleaning oil, so using it from new should keep things spotless in the long run.

PENNZOIL Ultra Platinum 0w-20 , 5w-20 or 5w-30 would benefit that engine . These have plenty of BORON and other additives . Have to wait until new rebate at the start of the new year , usually $20 . Enjoy .
