2007 Chevy HHR 2.2, wife took it to a fancy hotel. Drove fine going in.

Valet pulls it around, she's not impressed with his smugness. Cruise doesn't work, transmission is slamming. I google the symptoms before I see the car, it is suggested that P1818 is to blame, but no CEL is on.

She gets it home, there's a pending P1818. I clear it, cruise works.

There are two possible causes, per the google: Crummy programming not seeing it in reverse, hydraulically, between 0 and 10 degrees F. It has not been that cold.

Second, is slamming the shifter between R and D before the vehicle is stopped completely, going the opposite direction.

People don't take pride in their work.

Misleading title, should be valet neutral dropped my ride! What are the front tires like?

P1818 is pretty common on 2007 4T45 about the time the weather starts turning cold. The bulletin number is 07-07-30-005C. The temp window for the bulletin is 0-10 degrees C... not F.

TCM needs to be reprogrammed.

oooooooooooooh

Why do we have TSBs all metricified? It's all Obama's fault.

To be fair unfair to the valet we've driven this heap in this temp range before and never tossed a code.

Since cruise didn't work, it was in fact "broken", albeit through software. At least it went through the gears/ TCC lockup and had a working speedo, could have been a dodge.

You should NEVER EVER....EVER have a valet inside your vehicle if you care about it at all. Park yourself and walk a bit extra, if you have to. These morons don't care about your property, and will abuse it.

Could have, but then it would be moot since they don't break (or throw a code) when rolling backward and shifting to drive. That's a GM "feature." ;-) Its probably a bad habit, but I NEVER come to a full stop when backing up and shifting to drive and vice-versa. After all, you can't do a decent Rockford turn by coming to a full stop

Seriously, I do tend shift while still rolling l and let the torque convertor stop the car and smoothly start going the other way, but its never broken one part or thrown a code in a a million plus miles of driving. Of course only a tiny fraction of that driving has been in GM products, all the rest being Ford and Chrysler. Coincidentally (or not) Chrysler and Ford automatics had identical power flows through the planetaries in 1st-3rd dating back to the 727 and C6. GM had a different powerflow in the Turbo-Hydramatics 400 and 350 that was much more fragile RE shifting while rolling the "wrong" way.

I always come to a complete stop. I'd hate to see what happens if I don't. Transmission makes enough noise as it is shifting between PRND. lol

Yah, off the gas, foot on brake, rolling back, barely moving. shift into D and breathe easy. I din't back into anything. Lousy greenhouse and the mirrors are too small. It is done seamlessly in the TC van. I haven't gotten the feel for the Camry so I dont do it in that. I did it with the Grand Wags and there was over a foot of travel between when put in park and the rig stopping. Play in bearings and chains and gears just adding up.

My brother shifts his cars the same way. He never comes to a complete stop before shifting to reverse or drive. He lets the car slow itself down without using brakes to come to a complete stop and somehow, his transmissions are flawless!

I usually let it stop. A drive thru in San Diego last week really P'ed me off so when they brought my food out to my car I backed out of the parking spot and did a really fast neutral drop and squealed the tires out of the parking lot.

Juvenile, yes, but worth it.

I remember as a young kid watching a valet in Indianapolis from a hotel balcony get in some guys Porsche only to drive it like he stole it. He tore through the parking lot and did the drive/ reverse without stopping when he backed it in a parking space.
