AZone has Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic GL-5 5-30 and 10-30 on sale for $2/qt. I want to run this (10-30)in my brother's 1995 Z-71 5.7 with 150k miles.

Has anyone used this before?

He has been getting OCI's at 3-5k miles with dino Pennzoil or Quaker State 10-30. It consumes a quart between OCI's.

Thanks.

At that price I would buy them out. That stuff is normally $4.50 most places. You sure they didn't have it on the wrong shelf? I saw it that way at AutoZone before, took it up to the register, and it priced out closer to $5.

Not sure if the Maxlife Synthetic transitioned to SM yet, but the SL listed 290 ppm moly and a NOACK loss of only 8.31 %. The 10w30 looks as good if not better than Synpower. I'd think 5000 mile OCIs would be suitable to this oil.

Guess I will be visiting Autozone today.

No mistake, I asked manager he he said yep.

Had Trop Artic for $1/qt.

I have been reading on this forum for a month and keep reading people talk about it.

Is that a good price?

I was thinking about using it instead of wally ST as my top offs in my oil consuming '96 Vic 4.6.

I'll check out my AZ tomorrow. If Maxlife Syn is $2, I'll buy 'em out and become a 1st time Valvoline user.

I haven't tried it because it's as pricey as GC and M1 almost here, but the specs. have looked good to me.

Well I have 99 quarts of oil at home, but this deal is too good. Where I live I can get to several AZs pretty quick. Will be hitting the first one in about one hour. Only buying 10w30. Sure it's not bootleg? Price seems near impossible.

What a deal. I cleaned out the Gilroy, CA AutoZone today of their 5W-30 and 10W-30 MaxLife Synthetic at $2.00/quart.

They also had a shelf tag showing Castrol Syntec 0W-30 at $1 per quart! Unfortunately it was already all gone. It looks like the well loved GC is disappearing from AutoZone.

I do not think that US consumers understand 0W-20 and 0W-30 grade oils and the fact that they are completely appropriate in vehicles which call for 5W-20 or 5W-30.

I love a bargain

I hit 4 stores today after seeing this thread. Picked up 82 quarts! I think I have officially entered the realm of oil neurotic! I now have 152 quarts of oil in my garage. Not to mention 5 gallons of gear lube and some ATF. One oil change on our two daily drivers gobbles up a total of 13 quarts, so I am not too badly neurotic.....right?

If you look at the specs on 1FMF's post, there is very little difference in the 40c or 100c viscosities between the 5W and 10W-30.

I picked up plenty of both. 2 bucks for a good Group III oil is a great bargain. Heck, garden variety Castrol GTX was $2.09 on the same shelf!

Uh, that is a bit much for personal use.

Perhaps you should return some to your local WalMarts as a no-receipt return and get store credit gift cards. Autozone price, $2. Walmart price, $4.59. $2.59 profit per quart. Surely you can find something at Walmart you need?

John

P.S. Autozone should simply advertise their clearance sales on BITOG if they want to clear the shelves of any oil

At my local AZ it was not Valvoline instead it was Havoline 5w30 Synthetic. The had the Trop Artic also. I picked up 10 quarts each. $2 for the Havoline and $1 for the Trop Artic. Not sure my wife would stand for more. She was already rolling the eyes at me. Had it been the Max Life she probably would have rolled them more as I would have bought more.

I'm always a bit hesitant to stock up on oil I've never tried. Was going to start to hoard GC, but glad I never did -- didn't really like the startup noise. Ended up returning what I had to AZ and exchanging for M1. Lucky I returned it last week since it seems AZ is clearing out GC for $1.

Of course if you really like the oil, and you've tried it, by all means stockup.

Walmart buys low and sells high all the time. Why shouldn't a customer occasionally do the same?

Walmart sells some products at prices higher than the local independent hardware store does while advertising "everyday low prices". Price a basic duplex wall outlet or simple wall switch at Walmart and your local hardware store some time. The last time I did so the Walmart price was over $2.00 while the Ace hardware store price was $.79 without any special sale going on.

Doing a little price arbitrage the other way with those folks does not bother me at all.

I could not do that.

Does anyone worry about the gasket selling additives causing trouble in new vehicles? It would seem that if the additives swell gaskets and then they are removed the gaskets would be less effective (on a new vehicle) than if they were not swelled at all.

The addition of these "swelling agents" is what has kept me from using a high mileage product in an old Jeep 4.0. The jeep runs fine and doesn't leak at all. Am I being over cautious?

I got 16 quarts 10w30 at one Autozone about 2:30 today. At 4:30 I hit another Autozone, but they were charging the shelf price of $4.99. What gives? I wonder if the main office got tipped off and fixed their database? Surely this was a mistake.

The other weird thing and what makes me think it is a mistake is that, when I went in the first Autozone, there was no advertizement of the sale. I walked a quart to the register and asked for a price check, noting I had heard it is on sale. When it came up $2 the guy looked puzzled and said, "I guess it is on sale."

The second AZ had both the SL and SM (new label) and I had him price check both and they both came up regular price. Would like to hear if anyone has bought any today at the sale price after about 4 pm (eastern time).

Good Grief! Uh, guys...this is a real illness. Methinks we need a permanent counseling site here on BITOG with 24/7 reach. Especially for you two who are already over the edge, no doubt others here also very sick, and the rest of us pre-addicts. We need a psycho-techie term for this disease. And perhaps counseling for the addicts' spouses, as well.

There's a thread in the Photos forum where someone posted that one of the moderators at this site has 300 quarts.

I picked up 12 qts for 2 OCI's for my brother's Z-71. AZ had at least 2-3 cases left of each weight.

The sign on the shelf looked like a fax cut to size to fit placard.
