All they have to do is see what happened after the introduction of margarine (during WWII so that the butter could be sent to the troops).

Polymerised "vegetable" (aka seed/nut, there's no carrot oil) oil can be anything up to and including linoleum depending on how unsaturated and where it is before heating and exposure to oxygen.

The health of the troops was paramount, so all the "good", healthy and nutritious foods were reserved for the front...butter, being healthful and nutritious went that way.

The people back home needed caloric intake to keep working the factories, but ultimately their health wasn't as important as those on the front...

So they took oils that would not normally be used in big quantities ("vegetable", cottonseed etc.), nickel catalysts, and hydrogenated them to make a spreadable solid that resembled the butter that people were used for...it was gray and tasted like metal in the early days, and was quickly coloured to look more like butter. Much like the definition of synthetics across Europe, dying the margarine was/is illegal.

In the reaction, many trans links were created (evolution wise, we nearly only ever deal with CIS structures), thus TFA Trans Fatty Acid...

Incredibly, it was the butter substitute that was the precursor of the "saturated fats bad" movement, by frankenstein manipulation of oils that were never supposed to be a part of the diet in anything other than trace amounts (i.e. vegetable oils)...the industries that were spawned as a result of war necessity grew a life of their own, and became a parallel "product", with their own specialists, lobby groups, and health experts.

The history was obtained from an interesting text from the '50s that I read some time ago, describing the war effort need. As per my Grandmother, they were rationed small amounts of butter, and large amounts of gray metal tasting goop...they took the butter, and saved the "dripping" from roast meats, sausages etc. and used that for spreads and sandwiches.

This kind of food safety problem happens in Taiwan very often as well (although it wasn't covered up as much afterward as the mainland does).
 
I'm confident that everyone understands that reusing oil is nothing new.
I believe the Asian populations have the highest rates of alimentary cancers due, in part, to burnt/filtered/reused cooking oil. Kira
