Had to put a new cat in my 91 Dakota 2.5 to pass state inspection, the old one was rattling. Old one still has its guts. Am wondering whether scrappers want these things, and will pay a token amount for them-- or if they don't want all that palladium (?) and would make me pay for them to take it away.

Did you pay for a new cat? The catalytic converter is part of the emissions system on a vehicle, and is mandated by law to last at least 80,000 miles. If you don't have that many miles on your car, the dealer is obligated to replace it for free.

That's 8 years or 80,000 miles. Since it's a 91, 8 years have passed. Plus that's only for 1995 and newer vehicles.

For 1981 to 1994 vehicles, the Federal emissions warranty was only 5 years/50,000 miles.

The new cat came with paperwork describing the emissions warranty and a space for the mechanic to fill in an explanation of what was so wrong with your car the warranty doesn't apply. Pretty cool. Reminds me of the tags attached to sofas that can't be removed under penalty of law.

I got 4 bucks for mine from a iron scrap yard. It was so fouled up with oil I did not bother just replaced it and my car does have to pass emissions
