One of the better "leak stop" products on the market you can find just about at any auto parts place + Walmarts. Used by many technicians I know and by myself on two different vehicles over the years. Both times I used it , I added it and ran it in the enginesAnnoyingly, my Father sent it in to the mechanic he uses (who I think is an absolute hack but that's another debate) for a clutch change with a leaky rear main and he never changed it!
Pulling the gearbox isn't that-bad of a job really. I'd rather do it on the Defender than most FWD cars. Props need to be removed, then the transfer box, then the gearbox comes out with plenty of room. There is a whine coming from the gearbox so it will need a rebuild soon but I can't afford the cost or the time just yet. It's been whining for a good few years now and doesn't seem to be getting any worse with regular oil changes. At the same time, if the leak does get much worse then it will most certainly fast forward the job. Maybe I'll give it a few more months and change to Maxlife 15w40.
two times back to back with regular oci. The leaks stopped and never dripped again. I realize I was lucky with those but the product
is endorsed by lots of mechanics I have known. Stopped a leak in one of my Ford 390cui engines and my Chevy 307cui. Certainly worth a try before tearing into the job to replace the seals.
