2001 VW Jetta 1.8T Wolfsburg Edition w 134K miles.
Oil sampled after 4,450 inside engine
Topped off 3 times , it burns about 1qt every 800-1000 miles.

With that much topoff, I'm not sure what to think of this. This engine must be tough on oil.

Hummm. How about Maxlife or a more anti-wear additive oil or anti-wear additives??

That's a lot of consumption - is the engine actually in good shape and just burns a lot of oil, or is it on it's last legs?

Yes I'm not sure what to make of the reports given the multiple top-offs. I am still in the process of trying to find out if the oil is either:

1) Getting burnt up in the turbo
2) Leak somewhere (But I dont see puddles of oil in the garage)
3) I need a valve ring job (No smoke blows out of the exhaust pipes)

I have already :
1) Replaced all PCV hoses (and new PCV valve)
2) Had the dreaded cam chain tensioner gasket replaced
3) New valve cover gaskets installed

The oil consumption on my Nissan is about the same. (Early VQ35's especially were known for it)

I'm considering never changing the oil again like oliveoil suggests

Why take a step backward to Maxlife? It doesn't get much better than RT6 in terms of AW, not unless you go to a short-OCI racing oil.
