UOA Procedure?

I've never done a used oil analysis before, but I'm planning on doing it when I do my next oil change.

I ordered a test kit from Blackstone's website and read their procedures on how to take a sample.

Does anyone have any advice or hints? I don't want to screw up my test results if I do something wrong.

Nothing too special, I don't recall what their (Blackstone's)instructions say to do, but just make sure the oil is warm, pull the drain plug, let it run for a brief moment, catch oil in container til full, seal the container and good to go.

My advice is to collect a sample but DO NOT change the oil until you get the results back. Just siphon some oil out of the dipstick, then send that oil out for an oil analysis.

Once you get the results back, you can decide whether you want to continue with the brand of oil you were using, or if you want to change.

Thanks. Do you think it's worthwhile to get a TBN? It's $10 more, but I would like to see if my extended OCIs are fine.

Good point. Actually, I'm more interested in getting an idea of I need to shorten my OCIs... rather than change oil brands, so I may still wait until I do my oil change (to get a sample), then adjust my OCIs once I get the results back.

But then you're only getting a used oil analysis on the oil when its at say half of its usual life in your vehicle.

I sorta agree Dyoel. It takes ~ 4 weeks for me to get my used oil analysis results back from Blackstone.

I just take the drain plug off, let it drain for 5 seconds then put the sample bottle into the stream, fill it up then take it out, and put the cap on. Then I just wipe off the bottle and put it in the plastic bag and send it on its way. Simple as that!

Bingo....heed that advice.

I must have caught Blackstone at a good time... I got my results back in less than a week! I posted up the results in the used oil analysis section if anyone's interested.
