I finally had time to do the VCG on Dad's Accord. It doesn't look bad underneath the valve cover. The car has 122k~ miles on it. I've been using Valvoline full synthetic 0w-20 oil along with Mobil 1 oil filter since 2013.

Oil gets changed whenever the Maintenance reminder is down to 15%-25%. So, every 7k~/miles I'd say. My back is killing me. I'm hardly 26 😂 .Used OEM Honda gaskets along with spark plug tubes.

Valve clearance check while you had it open? I had exhaust a bit snug on cylinder 1...the remainder were fine. Mine looked similar to yours...I was going by the Maintenance Minder at 15%...which was at about 7500-9500 miles. 122,418 miles.

That I did not do. I don't like doing things that can potentially "ruin" the motor. I don't hear any "clanking" noises so we haven't gotten the valves adjusted. Maybe I'll have our mechanic do it at 150k.

Understood. The thing about valves though is: the TIGHT ones are the trouble-makers...and they don't make any noise! It's the Loose ones that are noisy, but loose doesn't burn the valve seats. They're probably fine. But if you notice, the cylinder 1 valve area has more varnish, I can only assume it's from increased heat. I'd check cylinder 1 for sure the next time you are in there. Thanks for posting!

Funny stuff ! Only way you could potentially ruin it by just checking, is maybe by turning it back wards, or filling it full of sand, dirt and water. :ROFLMAO:
If you don't check them one or more tight or zero clearance ones, could do the damage for you in not to many weeks down the road.

Shop around for a set of feeler gauges. As long as you keep them clean, you can always check yourself, and just not adjust anything--if you can remove the valve cover, you can follow the directions for checking. I think you'll be fine, but can sleep more soundly, knowing that the valves are fine (or know that you are going to spend wisely to have a mechanic adjust something that does indeed need adjustment).

Feeler gauges are like $5 at harbor freight lol. Maybe when it gets warmer out I'll take a look at them.

Neglect is the thing that can potentially “ruin” the motor.

You won’t hear any clanking with a valve that is too tight.

You won’t hear anything when the valve burns and you lose compression on that cylinder.

Don’t neglect required checks and adjustments.
