"A U.S. military charter aircraft flying from Afghanistan has been forced down in Iran by Iranian fighter jets, according to officials familiar with the incident.

The plane, which departed Bagram air base on Friday, was chartered by the Pentagon from Fly Dubai, an airliner based in the United Arab Emirates, and was carrying approximately 100 Americans and possibly a pair of Canadians. After being intercepted by the fighter jets, the plane was escorted to the southern Iranian city of Bandar Abbas."

Traveling out of Bagram is bad enough. I could not imagine touching down in Iran.

I have to wonder why any military transport/charter would not have a fighter escort in that area.

Cost, logistics, and the "optics" would lead to further escalation. Traveling close or in Iranian Territory via air or sea is a different animal. It is like living in a episode of the twilight zone Iranian military units are not overtly hostile normally but not friendly either.

Because this isnt MilAir. This is a contracted flight.

No different than when we charter Maersk lines to move stuff versus MSC and other USS/USNS prepositioning ships/oilers/etc.

It's like my professor always jokes... meanwhile at the DoD someone is calculating how many bombs it will take to turn Tehran into a parking lot.

Aren’t they allies? Maybe that was before.

Sometimes it’s almost too challenging to keep track of who our ‘friends’ actually are.

Iran didn't do anything wrong. The US military did.
They made errors scheduling and since this plane did not show up on flight plans they wisely ordered it to land.

Well antiqueshell, I have read your various posts for quite a while. Now I have a question for you. Does the United States ever do anything right?

Pull out a history book. Did the United States do anything right in World War II?

What about all of the billions of dollars worth of aid the United States has given out to various countries?

Do you ever think the United States does anything right?

Why would they even fly anywhere near IRAN for the love of G, charter or not. The person planning the flight is going to be so fired.

Yeah dave1251, I’ve been briefed on Middle Eastern history and the years of skirmishes therein.

Many Iranians got out of Dodge when the fit hit the shan, taking their intellectual and financial resources along with them to greener pastures.

Mine was a rhetorical question of course. Sorry for mucking up your thread.

And the plane has now left after refueling. They didn't have enough fuel to turn back to Afghanistan so had to land in Iran.

And US officials are also confirming the plane wasn't forced to land.

There is no outstanding conflict between the US and Iran especially after the start of nuclear negotiations and cooperation. Non-news.

You have no idea what the US Millitary Industrial complex has done to other countries... you wouldn't be saying that if you knew real history.

One, if it is the right type...

How do you know anything about what I know zpinch? Do you know anything about me? You know nothing about me but you say I don't know real history.

That says everything right there that needs to be said. You say negative stuff about me, say that I don't know real history, and you know exactly nothing about me. So you don't really know what I may or may not know about history. And because you don't know you have exactly zero authority to say anything about what I know about history. Which leads me to believe that I should not accept you as some kind of expert.
