The United States and Indonesia have signed an agreement to cut Indonesia's debt payments by around $30 million in exchange for saving forests on Sumatra island, the U.S. embassy in Jakarta said on Tuesday.

Under the scheme, Indonesia will place debt repayments into a trust over eight years instead of repaying the U.S. government, the U.S. embassy said in a statement.

The Indonesian scheme is the largest of its kind under the U.S. Tropical Forest Conservation Act.

Washington has struck similar deals with countries such as Bangladesh, Colombia, Panama and the Philippines.

They know the US is more interested in saving rain forests than they are, and they're holding their own forests hostage to extort money from the US government. Nice!

I say clear cut the rainforests and let the market decide how to cope without them being there anymore. Did well for Yankee whaling. Note that the market did figure alternatives after the whales were mostly gone. No reason to think that the market can't manufacture global scrubbers too.

You guys really don't understand politics do you.

It is not the trees that matter. It is the under the table deal we pay $30 million for but can't find a way to put it on the book, that matters.

Where do you think all the CIA and Secret Service funded projects are spending to?

By the way, $30 million is nothing compare to what "intelligence" and "spy" operations can buy us. A couple planes already cost more than that and could not achieve the same results.
