At work we went to digital steam turbine controls and switched from Akso Nobel/Supresta's EHC to EHC-S (not much of a change)as the control fluid. I'd hope they could go to some kind of polyol or something less nasty than organic phosphates, but I'm on the waste drum sampling and drum wrestling end of the fluid life cycle so don't get much input into the process. So far we're changing out the fluid every outage (about 18 months). What are other people using as turbine control fluid?

Caltex Regal R and O 32.

One series of machine was originally flyball governed, and later fitted with an EHG (Electro hydraulic Governor). The other still has the fly weight governor.

Both types share control oil and lubricating oil. One type shares lubricating and seal oil, while the other has semi separate seal oil, made up from main oil.

Neither series have had an oil change in years. One type leaks about 5,000l p.a., and is on a continuous top-up basis, the other just doesn't beat up the oil.

You need to consider the EcoSafe EHC-46. This is marketed by American Chemical Technologies. This is a direct relacement and is much safer than the ester based products. We have used this product for control fluid in a GE 225 MW Turbine/Generator for four years without incident.
