Half the responses in this thread would sort from definate weapons up the list of probable weaponized stuff to a cutoff point that won't offend people and call it good.
I'm more of a cynic and would ask what basic human needs does one need to survive a 3 hour flight? Bring only just those. Although if I got my way people couldn't run laptops and the terrorists would have already won.
And if flying were any less fun the rich mucky mucks who run the world and use planes to do so would have their shameful bits x-rayed and as a society our collective jaws seem to have dropped at that.

Yes to checking all that stuff, even gate checking so it's on the jetway when you step off.

I have not forgotten Vietnam where a lot of service men and women lost their lives because they trusted little children. They let them on the base never thinking they might be carrying bombs or that they may have them strapped to their bodies. We are now in a different kind of war and we must keep our guard up at all times. What is wrong with giving the kid a book or if to young to read then quietly read to them. This would be a great time for one on one time with your child. You really never know what type of person is sitting next to you --- it could be a very kind person or a terrorist. We are no longer in a world where we can trust everyone.

How do you profile a potential terrorist anyway? Would they be Male of Female? Would they be from the middle East, Africa, Asia or even from the U.K. Would they be just Dark or brown skinned? Would they have a non western name?
I hate to say it, but the U.S. may oneday have it's own home-grown terrorists, recruited in our own back yard.
What's happening here anyway? I'm no terrorist so I proberbly don't think like one, But, I'll tell you, If I was to get on a plane with an explosive stuffed in my Jocky pants, I'd make darn sure that they DID go with a bang and not fizzle on me
Better still, I'd leave my explosives at home, Fly clean, and create my havac once I got here.
