I couldd rant about the TSA on a lot of things. I won't, just one because it happened today.

Ill start by saying that I made a mistake. I took a can of tomato juice, which I had been given and did not consume on my outbound flight, through check-in on my homebound flight. Wrong, sure, I get that.

They found it after giving me a hard time and swabbing my bag because I had "too many electronic devices" in it, though none were ones that I had to take out by the regulations.

My options: throw it away or drink it OUTSIDE the gate. Of course, if I made the decision to consume it, I would have to go through the whole line again.

Stupid, right? Yes, on my part and theirs. They would NOT allow me to consume and throw away the can in front of them. I could only succumb to their two options.

What a waste. Do I feel any safer? no. Am I ever-more inconvenienced as a frequent traveler? absolutely. Sure, having the can was my fault, I didnt get around to consuming it, and it slipped my mind that I had it at the airport before getting on. But that said, why not let people have their beverage in THAT location? Theyve already spent my taxpayer dollars pulling my bag and making me watch them swab my travel shortwave radio, because of "too many electronics" (the others being a portable HD and an led flashlight, neither of which did they look at. What is another minute to let me consume my can? I am out of line.

They spend extra time on handicapped people, people who can't take their shoes off, and anyone that requests a hand-search of their person or effects. I sure wasnt implying bringing the can in the airport. But, instead they cost me a can of tomato juice worth 65c, which now Ive spent another 5c of electricity ranting over.

I feel so safe, but alas, malnourished now...

I did find that Price's Creamery of El Paso makes the most delicious chocolate milk though...

Yeah, I remember a similar incident with a tomato juice can a few years ago. I threw mine away.
 
Unfortunately regulations can't insert "common sense latitudes in judgment". We're also in a punitive employment situation. To forgive is divine, but to er is against company policy. CYA is the order of the day regardless of how ridiculous it may seem. For every lost can of tomato juice, there would be dozens of "holes" formed since some personnel would take liberty to be lazy.

I dont think it has anything to do with government workers, I think it has to do with idiotic regulations meant to make people feel "safer".

I prefer my idea - want to fly? All effects of any sort are stowed, no carry-ons. Everyone changes in a locker room into a hospital gown or tyvek suit or equivalent before entering the terminal; no checks, no scans, you cant have anything. One walk through a metal detector and youre on.
 
The T.S.A. are known in the law enforcement community as the biggest idiots on earth and get around the same respect as the Bergan County N.J. Police (meter maids) do from real Cops..
It's not their faults they are wanna be cops its really sad..
I am not a Cop hater i have many in my family and many friends as well that are real Cops... As the motto goes a Cop is a Cop is a Cop meaning everyone should stick together, Cops that is.. They don't see it that way i guess its their loss
 
If everyone who accidentally brought fluids along got to drink them at the examination point it would choke traffic.

If TSA ran a supermarket they'd make someone writing a check have it all signed and ready to go when they got to the checkout. Otherwise they'd have to go through the line again.

well plenty of other things choke traffic. When handicapped cut line, they choke traffic for people who have stood there, sometimes 30 minutes to an hour. When old folks come through, they choke traffic because they have to go get hand-searched. Ditto for anybody with a baby seat, stroller, small kids, etc., etc. While I don't personally think it is fair for the handicap policy, these things are all "it is what it is". But for that to be the actual case, then having issues with a passenger making use of their beverage should just be another typical thing...

No regard is made for the other means of choking traffic.
 
One time I went through a Miami airport security and the my driver license had an old geeky photo of me (very different than how I look now). This woman looked at it and laugh, asked me what happened? I told her it is none of her business, she got [censored] and ask me again, I told her it is none of her business again.

Got sent to the extra check area. The guy over there ask me what's going on, I told her that she was laughing at my photo and I told her to mind her own business, he laugh it off, did some simple checking, and off I go.

You can't really expect people who don't care about their job to be excellent service staff, be it in government or the private sector (contractor to the airport), especially when they aren't making good salary or have low education.
 
One of the things that happens when you try to screw down the wages, particularly of security staff (and clerks), they become mindless.

They will follow inane procedures, 100 percent of the time, and fail to use discretion anywhere.

Of course, management and auditors will beat them into that corner also over time.

We are getting closer to that as some (many?) flights don't allow plane-side check for luggage that meets their carry-on size restrictions but won't fit for whatever reason (overhead bin full usually from folks not putting one piece below the seat in front of them or not knowing how to stow it properly overhead). So, the carry-on (or so you thought) would have to be checked.
 
havent seen that yet... but it is a perfect set-up, as this will maximize revenue from checked baggage fees.

They start @ $31k and go up. Have a VERY SECURE job, impossible to be layed off so the good salary does not work here.

They are Government workers, why care? They have a guaranteed job. I know since I work for a Government. I don't have that attitude 100%, but many of my co-workers do and its EASY to have they way we are treated.

Taking TSA and making them feds was the beginning of the end for aviation. I only fly if I have to because of the hassle. And I LOVE to fly. HATE everything else.

I've gone from flying a dozen+ times a year to once every 2-3 years.

The pilots go through the SAME actions (minus the shoes last time I flew) as the passengers. Which is a JOKE.

If someone wanted to take the plane down, the last thing they would do is bring something on board.

But rules are rules and SOP is SOP. Both are written by people who take Gulfstreams and Government 737/757s as THEIR mode of transportation.

No lines for them...
