So if containing group III makes a motor oil a "blend", then M1 is a blend.

Then all oils are grp 3? Synt. that is.

I've never heard anyone say that Maxlife is a mix of group 3, 4, and 5. Where did this info come from?

Read it on this board...which is why I posted the info as "common consensus" as opposed to fact.

From what I recall reading, the seal conditioning aspect of Maxlife (blend & full synthetic) is made up of esters (Grp V) and Maxlife FS supposedly has a fair amount of Grp IV, which is why it meets European/ACEA requirements.

A poster named Tremo posted this a few days ago about Maxlife...

"Valvoline says it is their Synpower with extra seal conditioners and detergents."

If he is correct, that would make it a group III oil.

If this list needs to be refined, otherwise it will be an excellent reference.

It seems that most OTC full synthetic oils contain some group III base, with only very few exceptions.

For a race oil, definitely. For a street oil, definitely not.

Besides, that's kind of a non sequitur. If you had very different base stocks, you'd have very different add packs.

But isn't it safe to assume that a grpV base oil is likely to have a premium add pack? I know it's speculation but I doubt they would put an "average" add pack in such an expensive base oil.

Sort of OT, but does an ester require different additives than PAOs for things such as seals?

Of course. Point is, though, the add pack is formulated with the base stock and the oil's intended use in mind. It's not about "premium" or "average" as much as suitability.

Yes.

Other additives will be affected as well. For example, a high ester lube might need less EP/AW/FM than a PAO, but more bases to combat acid formation.

You could have two oils with completely different base stocks and add packs, but roughly the same net effect.

What a stick in the mud. Isn't this a discussion forum?

How many times have we heard "is 20 weight good, is 20 weight good" or "I run 20 weight in my car that suggests 50 weight" or "30 weight makes my car feel sluggish" or "what oil should I use in my Chevy V8", "Chevy 383" the list goes on and on.

Anywho, I think the following are true synthetics:

Amsoil not the XL line
Redline
Neo
