I have a 2003 Dodge Ram with a Hemi V8. I bought it used with 11,000 miles on it. Initially, it would use a quart of oil every 2,000 miles. The original owner told me that it did, but I did not see this as a big deal, necessarily. He used Castrol 5w30 and I switched to Mobil 1 5w30 at 12,000 miles and had to add a quart at 14,000. At 16,000 I switched to Royal Purple 5w30 and the oil consumption stopped cold...does not use any in over 4,000 miles on either change of Royal Purple...I did not think a particular brand of oil could stop oil consumption...am I incorrect??

Royal Purple 10W30 has served me very well.

I use it in my police car (2000 Crown Vic - 128,000 miles) and my daily driver (1996 Crown Vic - 158,000 miles). Both vehicles still use a little bit of oil, but it's not a significant amount.

They run smooth as silk on the Royal Purple, but I have to admit that I honestly don't know if I would use the stuff if I had to pay full price for it. There are other oils out there that are very high quality at a lower price.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Royal Purple. It's just that I'm a police officer and I support a family of five on my income alone. Spending $6 a quart for fancy oils just isn't economically prudent when you're making less than $40,000 per year and supporting five people.

I can find teh data sheets, but as a newbie to this site, can you tell me what I should be looking at...sorry to sound dumb...

Compare to your old oil. If it's very close in specs ..then somthing else accounts for your reduced consumption besides visc ...or so it would reason.

Actually I think he is using RP 5w30 which is 11 cSt at 100C. Mobil 1 is closer to 10 cSt I believe. Could 1 cSt make that much difference in consumption?

Just checked. The M1 tech data is now GF-4 and shows the 5w30 with 10 cSt and a flash point of 435 F. The RP 5w30 has a 455 F flash point. Wonder if the higher flash point is also helping reduce consumption?

The previous Castrol is close also, so since it only had 11K miles, I'm thinking the previous owner drove easy and it's a break-in issue also. Maybe just a manufacturing/driving issue and now a better ring seal??

I dont think it would help that much but you never know.

My Hemi never burned a drop from day one. The manual tells you to WOT several times to help seat the rings and ensure good break-in. However, some oils will help reduce consumption. If it's working, stick with it.
