You guys did this to me! I never was one to buy oil in bulk, but today I was at Wally World and noticed they were about to put out 3 cases of Conoco Phillips Trop Artic Syn. Blend and at $13.00 a case, I couldnt pass it up so I bought all 3 cases and thats all they had in. So, if you are looking for the stuff in the Galliano,La area, wait till some more come in. Now, to my real question. Has anyone heard anything about this oil or have any experiance with it good or bad? And, would it be a good idea to use it in my 97 4.6 liter with 180000 miles that has lived its life on valvoline and castrol dino? If not I can find another use for it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

P.S. After that moment in Wally World, I ran down to Advance Auto and bought 6 motorcraft 820s filters just to continue the insanity.

phillps parent co. is conoco. all lubricants are teir 1, motorcraft,kendall,76,phillips,and of conoco of course.

Two words:

For 10w30 SM blend, Dollar Tree stores rock.

For 5w30 and 5w20 you would probably need walmart's stash.

I have used Conoco (MC) oil in my 94 Ford Ranger and my 2000 Honda Civic for the past two years with great results. Had to get oil this time at Oriellys when our walmart stopped selling MC oil. I am now on the lookout for Phillips oil at Atlanta area walmarts and dollar tree stores.

would it be okay to run in an engine that has 180,000 miles on the clock and has only seen dino.? would i have to do any short ocis or anything of that nature? i have used motorcraft 5w20 syn. blend at 145,000 miles and stopped cause i was nervous about 5w20 going into my truck.

I switched my Ford work trucks and vans (4) over to TropArtic 10W-30 from Dollar Tree. These vehicles have a minimum of 71,000 miles to a maximum of 225,000 miles (Aerostar 4.0L)

Before the TropArtic, they have been run on (95+) quality synthetic oils....mostly Mobil 1, but also GC, Synergyn, Torco and Havoline.

So far so good (top vehicle 3.500 miles). Start up and operating noise are well within the range of the other oils....gas mileage so far is as good.

From what has been posted so far, it seems like a good oil. For $1 a qt. hopefully a diamond in the rough!

sorry, didnt mean to submit the post so quickly. i use 5w30 in my truck cause that is what the manual recomends and i dont feel comfortable using 5w20. the only trop artics i saw at wal mart was 10w30 and it was only maybe 5 loose quarts and than i saw the 3 cases of 5w30 and couldnt help myself.

I just picked up 22 quarts of the 10W-30 blend at the dollar tree by me to $1/qt. I need to do a quick 300 mile flush on each of 3 cars after the rinse phase of ARX prior to going synthetic. I almost feel bad using this stuff for only a few hundred miles

But once I'm done, I'll only be using syn, oh well.

well, out of sheer curiousity and the fact that i needed to get my mind off of my dads health problem and upcoming surgery, i changed my oil, filter, and pcv valve. i dumped 6.5 quarts of trop artic in and took the truck on a job, 85 miles round trip. the only thing i noticed is that the engine seems to run a little better, by better i mean smoother. i checked the oil when i got back home and it is still light colored. being that it is a synthetic blend, should i expect it to clean my engine somewhat? i will keep checking it and keep posted.

Keep in mind that the "synthetic" portion is probably Group III. (at least that's what I've concluded form the CAS numbers in the company-posted material safety data sheets) This doesn't make it "bad", but I wouldn't presume it'll have the same cleaning ability as PAO. The good news is that several BITOGers who've contacted ConocoPhillips were told this stuff's over 50% "synthetic" - all in all likely a very good general purpose motor oil. Like the thread starter, I also bought three cases of the stuff - but 10W-30 (can't/won't break the habit for my climate . . .). I won't get to my next scheduled oil change until late July or early August. It'll be real interesting to see UOAs start trickling in on these ConocoPhillips brands to compare with the Motorcraft UOAs.

A question, please?

Is it a misprint or does this oil actually have both the SM/GF-4 rating AND SJ/CF (as in diesel!) rating?

This is almost too good to be true as it means this is a very low cost 10W-30 HDEO, albeit only for older diesel applications, but a genuine HDEO never-the-less...

Cheers!

What about WallyWorld back there? Terry posted not too long ago that he believed the various CP brands may be more traditional regional preference marketing tools than actual formulation differences, so are CP's other brands available at comparable pricing ($1.25/quart or less)?

76 Super Synthetic Blend
Conoco Super All Season Synthetic Blend
Kendall GT-1 High Performance Synthetic Blend

(Don't be put off by the super-duper sounding language - these are all CP entry-level motor oils.)
