I would have saved $40 on shipping had I known. I ordered from TR thinking they would have the best price, but TD beat them by a mile. I asked TR if they could do something to adjust/price match, even meeting me 1/2 way with a $20 credit next purchase, but since my order shipped already they told me to pound sand. After being a TR customer for 15 years and ordering about 10 tires a year, you'd think they would do a lil something for my 80 year-old Mom's small order. Nope, that would cut into profits.

On the same theme, I ordered new Blizzak WS-50s early last year and a week later the WS-60 comes out. The WS-50 goes on discount and they add a $50 rebate. So the same tires cost about $100 a week later. I did not complain nor ask for an adjustment. I thought I was just being a good customer and ordering early in the season...but I got boned. More like my wife got boned, since she was paying.

This spring, they sent me 2 Avons that were over 4 years old and crumbled to bits in a month. Adjustment = 1 free tire. So, 3 tires + 4 shipping charges + 4 mounting charges to get 2 safe tires on my car. About $325 for 2 $75 tires. Thanks. Do you think that would happen at a local tire shop? Not.

Now, with this last deal, I am running at a substantial loss with Tire Rack. Many local shops match their price and maybe I'll look at that next time.

I just checked their prices on a 215/65/16 Michelin Harmony..........$121 at Treadepot vs. $98 at Tire Rack. Probably about even when you include Tire Rack shipping.

Yeah! It really depends on the tire. I've been checking the tirerack, treadepot and discounttiredirect for prices(bottom line). Both treadepot and discounttiredirect have free shipping(you can pay for shipping too if you want the tires/wheels sooner!) and the tirerack charges for shipping.. The tirerack doesn't have a free shipping offer. I've found that for certain applications, the tirerack with shipping is cheaper...So, it all depends! Also, if there is a PebBoys in your area, they offer buy 3 get 1 free after rebate on many tire brands/sizes. You must purchace 4 installed tires w/installation package,(mounting, balancing, valvestems and road hazard). This may work well for some folks. PepBoys is now carrying a larger selection of name brand tires than they once did.

TR's not so bad. Sometimes their price is very good, sometimes not. It does depend on the tire, though. Their stock always looks fresh from those I've bought from them. And I had no troubles with customer service the one time I needed it. I don't know how the other two online sellers would handle a problem.

A lot of local shops don't carry the line card that TR offers, and that is when I'll look to the latter if I really need a certain tire. Like with the Altimaxes I just bought; my local installer (who does great work) stopped carrying Generals several years ago. Had I went with Michelins, they would have had first crack, though. Buying from a local tire shop guarantees the best overall service and usually a reasonable overall price. I'll pay more for better service.

The ones to avoid are the general service and filling stations where the tires have been sitting around on the rack who knows how long.

Every tire I checked was stickered same price as TR, but w/the free shipping. afaik, many tire shops can "get anything" if you order it through them. I know Sma's is big, but their prices are not too great. I actually don't mind paying a few extra $ for local service, but my issue w/TR is basicly that they don't price match at all. My last order, I paid extra to ship from a secondary wharehouse, as if I was in charge of the inventory and did something wrong.

I've never had bad luck with Tire Rack. But I've not used them in well over 5 years.

The last time I logged in, I was still married to my former wife, and I basically got a quote for the Firestone tires I wanted for her minivan, and had the local Firestone dealer match the price of the tire and shipping and road-hazard coverage. Probably saved about 20% give or take.

So, TR or others are good for quotes that you can ask your local dealer to meet. Plus, they can make a bit on the install.

If I were ordering a wheel and tire package, I'd probably go with TR or some other vendor. But for replacement run of the mill tires, I'll either go to Sams and get their BFG or Michelin tire, or get some quotes on TR's website and then see if anybody wants to simply match the price and install the tires, etc.

Not really the case practically. Around here, the wait for out of warehouse orders is either way too long, and/or the price too high.

Fortunately, my local preferred shop is a big Michelin dealer, and that is usually our first tire choice.

$1002 at TR and $972 at the Depot for my 4 tires. Not too bad if you ask me.

Same thing happend to me two weeks ago when I ordered 4 tires for my Accord EX. A TireRack salesman calls me and says the tires I ordered online from warehouse in Georgia was out and that I had to pay extra to ship them from the Dover DE warehouse.

I said NO WAY, I don't need my tires ASAP. And 3 days later UPS dropped off the tires at my house.

The guy said it will be a month before the GA gets them back in stock.

I forgot to mention....

I checked the shipping label on my tires and they DID come all the way from Dover DE. My guess is that TireRack wants to keep all their customers and picks up the extra shipping cost.
