trapping mice in cathedral ceiling

I can sometimes hear a mouse or two above my bedroom in the cathedral ceiling. Obviously no way to trap in that location. Almost level the next section of the house over has a knee-wall storage area where I have about 8 traps around the perimeter and have caught a few mice and 3 flying squirrels.

Then there is the basement area 2 floors down from the bedroom with cathedral ceiling and I have a couple of traps there but have not caught anything.

How far do the mice travel on a daily basis to find food and do they go horizontally or vertically? Any bait better than peanut butter to attract them a farther distance to the knee-wall area?

It may be wise to electronically keep them out in the first place.
Most of those devices are not so good but I use one in my lumber buildings and it keeps them out- period.

Ok guys-when I get a chance today I will show you what I used in my buildings and may get a few pics.
I will also qualify how I use them and some reasons for negative reviews. A bit busy but I will get to it.

Do you live in a church? At not church mice quiet as a church mouse? I would just ignore. I don't think they will ravage you as you sleep. Peaniut butter chese or grains in a small have-a-heart - then let 'em out 1/4 mile down the road around the cul-de-sac

They can be a pain until you get the building buttoned up. Its amazing to find how little a hole they can get in.

Maybe a Kia in the future? So they can leave on their own.

I also know I seem to trap many mice in Oct and Nov then the number seem to go down to almost none.

Unsure if all the mice have been caught or only the dumb ones who wander into a trap.

Go to the "Whole Manual" pdf link at this site: http://www.ipm.msu.edu/pesticide_education_safety/training_manuals/vertebrate_pest_management . On page 37 learn about house mice and on page 48 about deer mice.

Living in a wooded country area (??), deer mice will move into your buildings with the onset of cooler temperatures. This explains the population increase in the autumn.
IPM equals:
- I.D. and study your adversary's habits
- Building sealed...nearly impossible
- Good sanitation of any food source (bird feeders, pets,etc.)
- Control....traps or bait.

Both species travel horizontally and vertically, so trapping (peanut butter) will get them. Poison bait results in rotting carcasses behind walls. The deer mouse has a bigger range AND they love to cache food.

I'm guessing that the deer mouse is your major problem....but you need to i.d. them for confirmation. Set lots of traps in many areas. Building exclusion is nearly impossible because they can get through a dime size hole.
