Trans fluid change on 2008 Ford six speed

I bought five quarts of Mercon SP fluid for a friends 2008 sport trac. It has the six speed auto (6r60)

From what I have seen, you must fill from the dipstick on the bottomside of the trans.

My plan is to drain using my oil extractor and then fill using a pump from the dipstick hole.

Question: If I drain while the truck if off (so I don't burn myself on the exhaust) will I be able to refill the fluid I took out? I am worried the system will drain the remainder of the fluid from say, the cooler, and I won't be able to refill.

I googled and got a bunch of "take it to the dealer" answers.

Take the whole plug from the pan, the big nut not the torx part. This will remove the standpipe and let the pan drain. remove the torx plug from the standpipe. It takes a t30 bit. Refill through the hole that you removed the plug out of. It should dribble from this hole when full when at operating temperature. It must be running and in park when you fill and check the fluid level.

You are thinking the 5r55, that one has the "drain plug" in the pan. I am talking the six speed (v8 trans).

Sorry, suck it out and replace it, those things suck checking the level. I suess the sp fluid should have given me a clue.

Why not drop the pan and change or at least clean the filter?

Fluid exchange is no substitute for filter change!

New trans has more crud, change that filter!!!

But the truck does not have to be on to do this, right? I have this many times on other cars, but double checking that removing the fluid won't accidently "evacuate" residual fluid in the cooler lines.
