tranny service on a chevy s10???

I am wanting to service the auto transmission on my father in law's 1991 chevy S10. I need to know what kind of fluid to use that is correct for this transmission and how much it holds. I am just changing the fluid and filter. No flush. This truck has a hard shift between gears and a small shutter when accelerating between 0 - 40mph. Hoping this helps the issue. 130k on the truck.

I'm not sure what trans that has, probably a 700R4 or it could possibly have a 4L60E. Dexron III is what the R4 will call for and the 60E also will use DexIII the pan capacity is around 4 qts depending on 4x4 and what pan it has on it. If you are worried, drain the fluid into a completely empty drain pan. Start refilling the trans one quart at a time. Empty one quart into the trans, then refill the quart with used ATF, when you get down to the bottom of the drain pan you will have determined the refill capacity. Start engine and idle and check fluid level and top off as necessary.

Hopefully someone with more specific knowledge will share some wisdom.

Thanks... It is just a 2wd model V6 with an automatic transmission. Was there 2 different models of transmission in 1991? I would not have thought they offered 2 autos in a S10 pickup.

No, I don't think they had two different models of trans in 91 S10's. The 700R4 became the 4L60E as it was updated and improved. I'm just not sure at what date the newer transmission was released in, 1991 is real close to the end of 700R4 days. Either way in 1991 I'm sure it'll be DexIII and about 4 quarts in the pan. I would refill with two quarts and then check the level and add from there. No chance of overfilling that way.
