Obviously, this relates to Toyota directly and not necessarily other manufacturers, but I saw this last week and thought it was interesting. A study conducted by a Toyota Parts dealer in Kansas--Toyota OEM, K&N, and Wix came out on top. They did a comparison of Tacoma/Tundra filters: http://partsblog.olathetoyota.com/1654/oil-filter-comparison-best-filters/. The results are posted to an external site noted in the article. They admit they didn't do a filter medium performance test, but they did a comparison of design/microscopic filter observations/etc.

The Tacoma study related to the Camry as well: http://partsblog.olathetoyota.com/4980/toyota-camry-oil-filter-best/

Fram standard filters and the identical Oreillys Microgard? I was unable to find a date, but seeing how this article has only has 1 "like" on Facebook, Id assume it was posted recently.

Well, they only "tested" 5 filters, & 2 of them were the same (Fram EG & MicroGuard), and tested ZERO synthetic filters, only tested one premium filter (WIX Gold)-not much of a test!

My apologies, I hadn't seen it.

@Bullwinkle: They did 5 for the Tundra and 8 filters for the Tacoma/Camry.

If they would have done a filtering performance test, they would see that the Toyota filters were not very good.

^^^^Good chart. The cartridge Camry filter is 04152-YZZAI though; I wonder if that makes a diff or if it's just a different size?

Depending on how old the post is, I wonder if that 90915-YZZD3 was the old Camry filter.

^^^ IMO, I don't think there will much difference in efficiency performance between the different Toyota filter sizes if they all use the same media, which they most likely do.

BITOG member "river_rat" did his own bench testing, and the Toyota/Denso (made in Thailand) OEM filters were noticeably less efficient at filtering. That testing, and after seeing the chart I posted, I stopped using the OEM Toyota filters. I just wanted something more efficient than ~50% @ 20 microns.

Thanks, will search for that post. What filter did you switch to? I'm looking at getting a used Camry in the next 6 months, so just curious.
