Toyota owners "boring"?

I've owned a few Toyotas including a '91 MR2 turbo (a genuine white knuckle ride) and I currently own an '03 MR2 Spyder. The neat thing is that both these cars are dead nuts reliable as well as being great fun. The next MR2 is rumored to be a hybrid with some rather revolutionary design.
My son owns a Prius which from many perspectives is an exciting car.
The Corolla and Camry both have iterations that are quite performance oriented.

I expect that someone who would rather "get from point A to point B and forget it had to happen" probably views driving as work they'd rather not do.

Yup. And not to sound sexist but alot of times I here that attitude from girls and women. Me and my male friends talk about driving and what we enjoy on the roads. We more or less enjoy the driving experience. We treat our cars as extensions of ourselves. Most girls I know say "I just want it to work and get me where I need to go, dont care about it beyond that.".

I think alot of times its a function of age and living situation. A person that has a spouse and kids is usually more inclined to want a car that just works as they dont always have the time to be tinkering. I can see their point. Personally I havent found a toyota that I didnt find to be a total sleeper but I know their are people who swear by them.

NO ONE will be a crazy as my neighbor. She painted her Corolla with a paintbrush and DECK paint! Car looked bad before, now it just looks like automotive abuse. And the ew color is a slate/cloud grey.....can you just feel the excitement? What was worse is that while in the process of painting it she used a brush and wrote "Herbie" on its back bumper. After about a week she painted both bumpers black. I dont live in the boonies but I sometimes feel like I do....

"...painted her Corolla with a paintbrush and DECK paint!"

Whadda' fool. An absolute cretinous creature. No class at all.

Why didn't she take the opportunity to glue astroturf or some other similar fake plastic grass/lawn stuff upon the car. Now, that looks cool motorvating down the boulevard.

If ye art the fun loving sort you can also glue a few golf balls to the stuff.

CBD makes a good point. One of the more enjoyable cars I've owned was an '88 VW Fox, for exactly the reasons he lists.

If only I'd known something about preventative maintenance (like, um, oil changes) back then.

I have an 88 Mustang GT and one of the reasons I like it is precisely because it's not "civilized" and it is mechanically and electrically not very complex so it is easy to work on. It is fuel injected, but Ford put very good self-diagnostics in the computer and in fact the entire fuel injection wiring diagram fits on an single 8.5" x 11" page.

Toyota's do have some vehicles with impressive acceleration. I had a chance to take a newer Avalon out. Very fast(0-60 in 6-7secs) but still nothing remotely sporting about it.

Every car is a compromise. Toyota pulls driving experience out of a car as part of their compromise.

I drive a car that does not sell really well but I love it, Subaru Legacy GT Wagon. It has aspirations of a sports sedan(well wagon) but is really a very sporty family car with dynamic handling, steering feedback, and nice feel. And yes the 250HP/250 lb-ft of torque coupled to a 5speed manual helps this car a lot.

I kinda like the Matrix, but it lacks driving dyanamics. Bring back the 90's MR2! My RSX is far from boring.

How can owning a Toyota allow you to retire earlier? Sure there are fuel savings and such, but seriously though... "several years"? I gotta have fun driving back and forth from work. This is why I have a nice car now while I am still young so I can enjoy it before it is too late.

Mercedes has even recently introduced camless valve actuation, which I'm anxious to read more about.

Interesting, I know BMW had that technology awhile back. So far they have utilized Valvetronic since 2001 which is pretty neat.

On the comment on VTEC, DOHC and ABS. I owned my first and last appliance car, a 95 Honda Civic EX Coupe for 9 years/225,000 miles. Not a single issue with any of those items.

However the time is coming soon to buy an appliance vehicle, minivan. However a used domestic seems like the way to go due to incredible depreciation to offset potential repairs if any.

OK...So my wife and I are cruisin'in our Jeep TJ (no roof or doors) downtown Windsor ,Ontario stopped at a light in front of the Casino (Riverside & Goyeau).A group of oriental tourists are getting ready to cross the street from the waterfront parking and they all stop in the middle of the cross-walk and take pictures of my wife and I sitting at the red light. To tell you the truth I started to laugh...I guess we're not that boring if we're worth a few spots on the card!

ALL sedans are not boring. That said "I" think most Toyota, Honda and Nissan sedans are a bit boring.

Again, My daughter's 4-runner Truck is not boring, actually very nice and practical.

You don't know the half of it. I traded a BMW Z4 for my Current Tacoma. Z4 +useless=boring.

Those cars have the ugliest tack-on plastic of any production car I can think of right now. I don't like the tall and skinny look of the Corolla, but I might have taken a Matrix for a test drive when I was looking for a new car if it didn't have all that plastic. Looks like they've cleaned up the Matrix since then though, or maybe all the ones I saw on the street initially had some kind of option package, and I just assumed they were all ugly.

I wouldn't call the Toyota Twin Turbo Supra a boring car by any means, delivered the best bang for bucks and was amongst the most reliable of sports cars around.

Agreed but tell us what Toyota offers new now that is even remotely close? Nothing IMHO. Hence the thread start they have become a boring car producer.

Toyota has some very interesting Supra replacement on the anvil, just give them few months and you will see and F-I derived V8 sports car from them. Even Honda has no NSX replacement out yet sadly.
