Changed the factory fuel filter on my 1999 3RZ. I cut it open to check the condition of the media because BITOG, of course

Last picture shows a pleat torn open revealing some sludgy stuff in there. After the fuel dried off the stuff looks like silt.

The filter change was done as PM with no current issues and changing it did not impact the engine performance. But taking a look inside the filter made me glad to have done it anyway.

Cool. I wish I had cut open the fuel filter on my truck. It was 10 years old. I was too scared.
I will say it saddens me cars don't have them now. I just did the pump on my truck and I peeked inside the tank and it was clean as a whistle. All that stuff makes it through the sock on the pump and ends up either in your engine or filter.

My 1993 Ford Ranger got it's first fuel filter change at 100,000 miles, and looked as bad as that.

I actually couldn't blow through it.

It still ran fine, though. Very surprising!

The CI of a fuel filter has a lot to do with how clean the fuel is that you buy. I changed them out every 120K miles. YMMV
