Update, guys: BIL let me take the vehicle to my usual auto repair shop. They hooked up their Autel scanner but it could not read the codes. Something about a communication error. Tried 3x, no dice. The shop foreman said they have seen many such cases in the past, and the usual fix was to clean the carbon off the egr and intake manifold. Now to relay that to the BIL.
Toyota D4D engine, CEL turns on after driving 6 miles, no other symptoms. Ideas?
