Toyota A1 filter - Denso, CarQuest Premium, or Fram FE?

We have a 2GR-FE that has seen Denso/OE filters its entire life. Price hikes at the dealer (and ~$7.50 at WM) and my hatred for the mess caused by changing that filter led me to select a "better/best" filter for and go double intervals - 6 months on lube, 12 months on filter (probably 10k). Note, the short changes are due to a fairly abusive short trip cycle.

Well, it was the $13 Fram FE. But now all the hate, is the concensus to move my loyalty to the CQ-Premium ($15, $10 when on sale)? Or does the leaf-spring-gate flashlight-test-gate failure not apply to my cartridge? Stick with the FE as the best filter for filtering and sleep easy?

The YZZA1 is a cartridge filter. There should be no Fram Endurance hate for that style. They are fine.

There is no leaf spring to fail.

Buy a case of the OE Toyota filters when an online dealer is offering an increased percentage off. Should be well under $5 each.

The recent leaf spring cracks in Fram filters are different & your filter is not subject to that defect.

If the Carquest Premium is a PG it may look similar the the Toyota

I think the Fram Ultra is XG9972?

Purolator BOSS PBL25608 It will have a Polymer reinforced backing "SmartFusion" media. It will run your 10k no problem & appears to be constructed stronger with endcaps as well if you are wanting that.

That PG in the link looks good, but some others with regular end caps have shallow pleats that don’t fit all the way to the center tube. There is a gap from the pleats to the tube. The Toyota are designed right. I had the same engine. Car Care Nut has a lot to say about that particular engine and I think it was about oil filters too.

A full synthetic filter will be good for 20k miles. It also resists the effects of short trips several times better than cellulose.

If the Fram Ultra is full synthetic (ie still pink media) then it is a great choice so long as you trust it's construction - in cartridge form I have seen issues so you might want to check your particular model.

Purolator Boss is also full synthetic and apparently well constructed.

The European options will be well constructed but may not be full synthetic in your case as they typically match OE requirements.

Last I checked the XG9972 at walmart was pink. I don't know enough to know if it's "synthetic" or double layer. The FE9972 is white, as is the P-Boss. The FE and XG all looked similarly sloppy in construction (excess glue) but I"m not sure it really matters to performance. I looked but don't have a convenient/cost effective source for the Mahle to make it appealing over OE/Denso cellulose.

The appeal of the FE was that it did better at filtering (smaller, efficiency) compared to the Denso.
