I'm at my home town in Iowa this weekend. The next town to the south was hit by a very strong tornado at about 4:30 this afternoon. We drove about 5 minutes to a friend's house to make sure they were ok. They were safe, but their house was completely destroyed. We carried as many large items to shelter as we could, but I'm sure many keepsakes will never be found. Their next door neighbor was killed and his wife was found in the corn field severely injured. I'll never forget the destruction. Many did not live and many more were hurt. Please pray for them.

I've been through two of those and hope to never see another one. Mother nature is a powerful force. Our prayers are with the goods folks in Iowa.

Thank you for posting this. After the tornadoes that went by this area earlier this year, I have a new found respect & fear of them. Your friends are in our prayers.

You guys that live in areas that get tornadoes, like TyotanSaturn: I'd highly recommend getting TWO, count em, TWO quality battery operated weather radios with alert (one for backup) and seriously have a plan of action for what to do. This year has been pretty bad. Especially at night, if a warning is issued, if you have a basement, get down there ASAP in a corner away from windows and just jam blankets and pillows around yourself. As many as you can get. You can survive violent tornadoes that way. If no basement, jump in your bathtub and do the same thing - pack pillows and blankets around you.

Might want to use http://www.wunderground.com doppler radar as well - become familiar with it, as you can zoom in to your area and the radar will tell you where the tornado is within the storm and it's direction. Just click on storm tracks.
