Top offs on your carry gun, yay or nay?

I didn't know that, thank you!
My first gun was a S&W 5906. All stainless 9mm. 15+1. I carried it on an empty chamber in my flight gear for Desert Storm. Super reliable gun. A bit heavy.

After we got back, I used to go shooting with it, and I loaded it 15+1 by putting one in the pipe and sending the slide forward. A few years later - it had an extractor problem. S&W fixed it free under warranty - broken extractor spring and chipped extractor. Again, this was a very sturdy gun, known for reliability.

I didn't shoot much after I got it back from them, and a few years after that, I was going through training down in Artesia, New Mexico. The "always load from the magazine." point came up.

I hadn't heard that before, and I realized that while S&W fixed the pistol under warranty, the damage might well have been my fault.

When you load from mag rim of the case goes behind extractors claw, if you put round into chamber and drop slide then claw hits and goes over rim with some force and can break claw off. Never manually load chamber and drop slide after.

I learned not to do it from you, my first guns were rugers, and they did not prohibit the practice. I never realized it was an issue, until you brought it to my attention. Other guns of mine do forbid it.
