A ESPN television segment on last weekend's race from Infineon Raceway showed a Fram oil filter cartridge that goes into a large black metal housing. The filter element itself looked like it was made of some sort of wire mesh. This is new from the typical drag racing conventional Fram racing oil filter. Will this new design eventually become common in street vehicles as well? Do they perform better?

How important is an oil filter on a top fuel dragster?
Seriously, in a couple of seconds they will get rebuilt again anyway. I would imagine any "filtering" is catching the big pieces and put an emphasis on maximum oil flow.

I'm actually surprised to hear that they use filters at all. But a 'wire mesh', unless incredibly fine, doesn't sound like it would catch the small stuff that paper elements catch. I'm also betting they go for catching the large stuff and ignoring the small stuff in favor of maximum flow.
