Not that it's likely made the media over there, but one of Australia's wealthiest scumbags, Clive Palmer ran for, and made it into Federal Parliament last time around with his Palmer United Party.

How wealthy ?

Well his pet project is the $500M "Titanic II"...

One of his ventures "Queensland Nickel" was facing hard time, so naturally, one of the richest blokes in the country approached the Federal Govt for a bailout...

* the company contributed $21M to Palmer's political campaign.
* Initial statements are that employees will not get their termination entitlements (in Oz, the banks come first, employees just about last).

But he HAS promised to "tell the truth"...just not yet.

It's a problem I see alot. Someone makes an epic amount of money in business, and then the God-complex kicks in and they just make the assumption that their success is proof that they can touch anything and turn it into gold.

A lot US government grants and loans to the "alternative energy industry" have gone to the connected who contribute to the right politicians and laugh as their companies go under, but only the taxpayers and employees suffer.
