Tire Dismount / Re-Mount Prices - Ugh!

I recall this thread and just left my tire shop scratching my head....as maybe I was just charged a special one off rate today

Normally I am getting new tires on new wheels so it's just a mount/balance and Road Force Alignment....

In today's visit, it was 2 tires dismounted, one mount and balance (no road force) and 2 disposal fees......and still slightly sticker shocked on my OTD visit today

Had a tire blowout on my utility trailer about 5 miles from home on Labor Day. Michelin LTX M/S, P215/75R15 takeoff from a Jeep Cherokee I once owned. I estimate this tire and its axle mate are about 30 years old, so I got my money's worth. Tire carcass stayed together enough to prevent the rim from riding on the pavement and get boogered up, so "hats off" to Michelin.

A coworker gave me a pair of 5 year old P235/75R15 takeoffs from a pickup, but they were still mounted on rims. These rims had a bigger bolt pattern than my utility trailer rims, so I had to get the tires swapped over.

Went to a local shop. Total cost to do the swap was $60, no balancing at all. Wow, I guess I'm old. The last time I did this, I think I paid $20.

Oh well, at least it was cheaper than buying new tires.

This is why I don't understand why people buy cheap tires with treads that don't last. You are just going to have to pay more often for mounting and balancing over the long run. Are you really saving that much? Or are people just planning on getting rid of their vehicles before that happens?

These days mounting and balancing still might equate to buying one new tire... depending on the size. You have to look real hard to get a decent truck tire for that.

But you will also have to buy new tires again sooner.

I have had my no mar tire changer for motorcycle tires tires. No longer ride so I need to take it down.
Manual tire changers suck. Breaking beads is a nightmare, modern low profile stiff walls are a nightmare.
