I've got a Ranger (2.5L, 4R44E, 106K miles) that I've been doing a lot of routine maintenance on lately. As the vehicle has never had a transmission service, I went ahead and dropped the pan, replaced the filter, cleaned everything up and installed a drain plug. Finished up by adding four quarts of ST Mercon V and the plan is to drain & fill four quarts with each of my next two oil changes.
As for the pan, there were no metal bits or shavings to be found; only a small bit of metallic paste on the magnet. However...
I began wiping down my collection pan and noticed six little metal discs. They're tiny, non-magnetic and shaped like watch batteries (yet only a tenth of the size). [I tried to take a photo, but can't focus without blurring it]. Now when I noticed these I said a colorful "uh-oh" and began to worry. But then I began to reason that they could have been in there for ten years...it's not like I've noticed any transmission issues during the 65K miles I've owned it. It still pretty much shifts like new.
So, what are they and how worried should I be? BTW: For all I know, there could be many more of those in the old ATF (I'm too chicken to go strain it out).
