I have a 2.3 liter engine with a timing chain. Is one type of oil, or brand better than the havoline? I am using 5w30 havoline dino now.

Timeing chains like an oil with a high hths and lots of cheap ZDDP! A 15W40 would make your timeing chain happier then 5W30.

Any motor oil approved for use in your vehicle will be fine for the timing chain. The chain receives metered, filtered oil in use - just like every other moving part of a motor.

No a chain is not harder on oil unless you are compareing to a belt. Chain is the gold standard. Gear driven engine parts are harder on oil then a chain could ever hope to be. Different parts like different additives due to pressure and temp of parts. Not all AW/EP additives behave the same. Materials also influence uptake of various aditive.
