Timing Belt Opinions

FWIW, I ran a Goodyear timing belt on a Nissan VG30E for 90K and the belt was in OK shape when it was swapped out for a OEM Gates-Unitta belt. Dayco is also the OEM supplier for Toyota - my parent's Sienna has Dayco as OEM but I would never run Dayco belts since the ones bought at Pep Boys or Kragen before they switched over to Goodyear weren't that great.
I also see a few Japanese-made Gates belts sold at Kragen/O'Reilly.

I've never had an OEM Honda belt fail in service, and we have had six Hondas.
In fairness, I would imagine that the failure rate of aftermarket belts is probably also very low.
I have known people to have OEM belts fail when run well past the recommended mileage. For example, guy down the street went 129K on his old CRX before failure. He had bought the car new, and said he didn't know it should be replaced. There are two Honda owners at work setting themselves up for tradgedy, one with a CRV and one with a Civic.
I have advised both that the T-belt must be changed now, but neither wanted to hear it. Oh well.
Age is part of Honda's recommendation, so I suppose a really vintage Honda on its original belt should be changed as well.
The consequences of belt failure are simply too serious to ignore the belt.

fdcg27: My belts have 58K on them and are just 10yr old. The 105K change is still quite a way off. What time line dones Honda put on the change.....10yr?

If it's a Gen2 or Gen3 CR-V, it has a chain, not a belt. Now if only Toyota hadn't decided a belt was necessary to make the 4.7 smooth enough for the Lexus crowd...

Huge improvements in elastomer technology happened between 1985 and 1996, and also, the underhood of a Nissan Quest might have been lower than that Maxima, which looks like a V6 wedged into the space of an inline four.
