My friend's 1989 Mitsubishi Mighty Max with 198K miles is basic basic transportation.... No power steering.... not power anything.... it has AC and a radio...thats it! I asked you guys about what oil to run a few months ago and someone suggested HDEO.... well, finally we changed the oil with Pennzoil Long Life 15W40...I forget who said it but i was told its good for cars that burn oil and run rough. Well... in the few miles we drove it, it stopped smoking! It still smells like oil is burning but it not in great amounts. The engine revs very smooth! It's incredible! It's engine is quieter than my 4.0L Jeep!!! This thing has a 90hp 2bbl 2.0L I-4! I was driving it home last night and i barely had my foot on the accelerator and it was slowly acclerating to 35! I was speeding without even noticing! My friend is thankful the the advice I gave him but I cannot take the credit since its you guys who helped me alot.... hence why I posted in this section, not the Diesel oil section.

I'd bet a Pepsi and Pop Corn it was Jelly the one who adviced you to use an HDEO. He makes some good points regarding HDEOs, but some of us see him as a bit pushy! I might try the Pennzoil or Schaeffer's 15W-40......or Redline 10W-40 or Castrol 5W-50....or..... [stretch] ........in my LS1!

I'm runnin Delvac 1300 in my V10 right now. Gonna see how it goes for a few thousand miles. Hoping to see how well it cleans it.

Due to reading here I decided to try Rotella in my LT1, really like it so far, just about due for a change and will be getting my first analysis [Happy] . Really learned a lot in my short time here.

I am using the Delo 400 15w-40 for the first time for the rinse after auto-rx treatment and it seems to really be cleaning as it has turned black in about 1700 miles. Plan to continue this oil in my 250,000 mile toyota cressida. I plan on 6000 mile change interval which I believe this oil can handle.

Glad it worked out well for him. Sounds like it worked out better than any of us would have ever guessed! [Big Grin] If I wasn't using Schaeffer 15W40 in all my lawn & garden equipment, I'd be using Pennzoil Long Life. [Smile] --- Bror Jace

I've been using Pennzoil Longlife 15w40 in all the vehicles I deem it suitable for (older, pushrod designs and higher mileage vehicles) , and have been suggesting it to others. Both I and everyone who has taken my advice are VERY pleased with this oil, and its price and availability are tought to beat.

I recently switched from the manufacturer suggested 10w-30 for my 1994 Toy truck (22r-e) to the Pennzoil Long Life 15w-40. At 130,000, it really seems to be running smoothly. I'll do my first UOA and post it as soon as I complete my OCI.

I have had good luck with it too. In an abused 2000 VW 2.0 ltr. Smooth and reduced consumption. I bet your friend was using gar-bage oil before. [Wink]

I'll agree, but add: For those in cold climates and not liking the 15W part of most 15W-40's, check out some of the synthetic 15W-40's......I tend to think Amsoil 15W-40 is a great oil, but I am biased after seeing the UOA's in my Volvo gas turbo.... [Big Grin]

Too bad HDEO's don't come in a 10W-30. Yea, I know the LL and Delo 400 datasheets show that grade but they aren't stocked anywhere.

Well, his dad is soo impressed with how the truck is running now, he said go ahead and do a tune up and carb tune. The fuel filter has never been changed (he says he doesn't remember if it has been changed). My friend went to Houston's Todai Restaurant yesterday and he said he had a lot more acceleration and pick up so after the tune up, i'm sure it's gonna run even better. The manual specs a 20W50 is good for 32F and up...and thats with SF quality oil.

I believe it was Jelly! He said that he's used it in many vehicles with high mileage and oil burning and it has made the vehicle run a lot better. My friend likes Chevron's oil (b4 we changed it, I poured in 1/2 quart of Chevron Supreme as a makeup oil) but if Pennzoil is making his truck run really well, i don't see a need to switch.

I ordered two cases of Delo 10w30 in both gallons and quarts last year. And as you indicate, it is somewhat of a hassle...depending on the jobber's order cycle you might have to wait 3 weeks. I have about half of it left and will probably start buying cases of 15w40 at Sam's when this supply runs out. The biggest issues I had when ordered it in May 2003 were this: - Quarts were dated Oct. 2002, gallons dated Nov. 2002. - The oil was rated SJ instead of SL. No big deal, but what if it had been a year or two older....once you order it, it's yours when it arrives. Otherwise, you can go retail and check the dates before you buy....but as you said, no 10w30 on retail shelves.

You can thank the API for that, but there are a couple. Amsoil HDD 5W-30 and Delo come to mind. Meat of the thing: NO XW-30 oil will be TRUE HDEO IF they are SL licensed, because of the Phosphorous (P) limit of 1000 ppm, and soon to be 800 ppm. The beauty of HDEO X-40's are: they aren't limited (at least in SL vintage) by the 1000 ppm P requirement and the good ones will have 1200-1600 ppm P.

I have a 1987 Mitsu Mighty Max work truck. Around 170K miles, but I take a different approach. I run the dreaded North American Castrol Syntec in 10W-30. [Big Grin] It had Havoline 10W-40 Dino a lot of it's life. I have virtually no consumption now, no leaks, and quieter than ever. I put it in around 120K, I think? Great truck. All I've done is change the timing belts, fix the rusted gas tank, tires, and that's about it.

Hmmm..... thats not a bad idea... he said he doesn't mind spending that much on oil if it will help. I'll have to try Syntec 10W40 after a second OCI with Long Life. The little Mitsu is one of those cars that I say.... with a little TLC you will like it again.

Just relating my experience. I think the Syntec 10W-40 is very interesting in general. No need to spend more though if the Pennzoil LL is working well. This engine doesn't necessarily need something very viscous to run smooth. In fact I may be prompted to try the Pennzoil LL. The reason it likes PZ may not be totally because of visc, but other factors.
