I believe we are in philosophical disagreement regarding maintenance here, but that's okay. I'm not a if-it-ain't-broke-don't-fix-it guy. I strongly believe in preventive maintenance, which includes routine replacement of failure-prone components. I see cracks due to age on the front brake lines, so they are being replaced. The rears appear fine, so they will remain under observation.
However, I do hope that DOT approval means indeed a bit more than self-certification.
From what I've heard by now, especially in regard to the Audi OEM rubber brake hose having a rigid nylon lining, I don't see any reason to upgrade to the ss lines, which originally was my intention.
