I was looking into getting setup with a Pentax K-x but realized I wouldn't have the budget to do it right. After looking at the superzooms on the market I zeroed in on the Nikon L100. I've been very happy with it and it does almost everything I had wanted. The only thing I'm not crazy about is the manual focus, which is mostly useless. I had it with me on my recent trip to Paris and I gave it a real workout with everything from snapshots and quick videos to flashless low light shots in the catacombs and Notre Dame. The extreme zoom is really nice and I'm not enough of a snob to notice the slight distortion. You can never have too much zoom.

Depends on what you are looking for. I'm a fan of big sensor's low light capability and am very happy with my Fuji F200EXR set to 6MP. It is small and handle low light or high dynamic range (shadow and bright sun in the same picture) well. Panasonic LX3/5 and its Leica cousins are even better but significantly more expensive.
Usually DSLR has the biggest sensor size, then follow by the micro 4/3. If you don't mind the bulkiness I'd say an older model or lower end DSLR.

I personally love my Canon G7 and use it most of the time instead of my Nikon D40. Awesome macro on the G7. When I want the clearest pics I use my D40 with an 18-200 VR or 108 VR lens.
The G7 is one of the best point and shoot digicams with advanced DSLR-like features if you like to tweak your photos.
I think Canon has the G12 out already.

I'm looking at superzooms such as the Panasonic DMC-FZ35 ( fz35 ) and FZ40, but came across a low end Pentax dSLR ( Pentax k x ) which seems more worthwhile in the long run. I have the Nikon D70s, the camera is 5 years old and looks brand new and more importantly will shoot better pics than any current point and shoot. The size can be a limitation but some of the current entry level DSLR's are very small.
I would love to own a Leica, very nice package for traveling, but my Nikon just keep chugging along.
My friends always ask me the typical noob question when I show them some pics: "How many megapixels your camera has?" They look on their faces is just priceless when I tell them 6MP

Yeah, unless I can't carry the Pentax around, I don't think I will use my point and shoot very often. My friend, sister, and I went to a Jingle Ball concert in December and we had seats in the last row of the hockey stadium it was held in. I used the 55-300mm kit lens and got some good pictures for where I was sitting. I was using it as a telescope at times because I couldn't see the artists on stage. I couldn't have done it with a point and shoot. I almost laughed at the people using their cell phones to take pictures sitting in our vicinity.
In the right hands, the pictures come out really sharp and look amazing. But most people don't know how to handle it and the pictures they take are a carp shoot. And after seeing other dslrs recently at Universal Studios, I appreciate how compact Pentax bodies are relative to the other brands. Still look like a tourist with it around my neck though.
I would recommend my camera to someone looking for a beginner dslr, but I think many are too brand conscious and would probably look for a Canon or a Nikon instead.
