Thinking about OCI is giving me OCD!

OK here’s the question…

As the temp is dropping (like a stone) I’m losing my guts to run Mobil 1 out to 7,500 miles as I had planned.

Most of the driving in my 2 vehicles is relatively short hops - say a 12 mile run in the morning and a 5 mile run in the evening for one car, the opposite for the other (sharing daycare pickup duties with the Mrs.) On one car there’s more errands etc on the weekends, but still mostly 'shorter' trips to the store etc.

I’ve got M1 5W-30 in my Chevy with the 3.4L V6 and M1 0W-20 in my Honda Odyssey with the 3.5L V6. Filter is Acdelco / Wix/ Purolator…

Is running Mobil 1 ‘only 5,000 miles’ really stupid? 6,000 miles? Beuller? I had considered 7,500 miles to be the ‘minimum’ interval for a high-quality synthetic but now getting the cold feet (literally and figuratively). I have all these visions of nasty crud accumulating in the oil.

The rest of my ‘maintenance schedule’ for these rides is pretty conservative (ie Transmission, coolant, brakefluid etc), just wondering if I’m going ‘way overboard’ instead of just ‘overboard’ if I shortened up to 5K miles. Money isn’t really the issue since I do the work myself. Just don’t want to feel dumb while I’m at it...you've heard of "compassionate conservatives",well I want to be "consistently conservative"!

Not sure a UOA would make me feel more at ease, since the ‘variables’ are always changing. Plus, I’m not sure where to set the bar for UOA results - what's good enough?. Guess I'm just looking for the optimal 'no brainer' OCI without running Mobil 1 3,000 miles

Or should I just run a good dino (5W-30 and 5W-20 as appropriate) every 3,750 miles and call it good? Haven’t heard anybody yet say that was a bad plan.

Sorry to beat this dead horse. My shrink is off for the holidays so y’all are my only hope.

Well, without a UOA, I don't think anyone could give an absolute answer. IMO, With short trips, 7500 may be pushing it wihout a UOA depending on the vehicle. 5000 is very reasonable for a short haul vehicle.
I have 2 different vehicles also, 1 is primarily highay driving, using GC and a 7500 OCI for warrenty reasons, the other is Dino and 3000 mile OCI, mainly because it is shorter trips and it takes 5-6 months to get the 3000 miles.

I have no knowledge or experience with Honda. M1 should be ok in the 3.4L for around 6k. I would do a uoa on it then to check for potential coolant leak problems, air filtration efficiency, etc.

You are correct in worrying about crud. Keeping insolubles in check, even with a quality oil like M1 will be a deciding factor in oci for this one.

Going beyond 6K is a shot in the dark without a uoa. You may find that to extend drains beyond this point, you may have to use LC to keep the insolubles in check.

Doing a uoa with a Dyson analysis at 5K-6K was what I did and consider it money well spent. I think determining engine health is required before extending oci.

Don't worry, you don't need an analyst, but perhaps your engine does before you go extending those oci's too far.

Matt89, I have almost the same type driving. I live 3 miles from work. In my 96' GMC that my son will be getting soon I went 5000 oci with Mobil 1 10w-30. In my new F150 I will be going 3mos/3000-4000 miles with Pennzoil dino 10w-30. It actually costs me more to run the dino but I just feel better getting the short trip oil out of there sooner.
Now my wife drives alot of highway miles in her 02 Explorer and it easily goes 5000 oci with dino, proven with uoa.
Good Luck
Dave

if you think youre getting OCD, try actually being someone who HAS it!!! it SUCKS!! really!! im dying to pull my GC now at 6K miles rather than go another 1K miles to do my sample (based on UOA's-but not in the winter).

good luck!

OK, I've settled down some now that the temp is way back up to the 20's

Mobil 1 claims to be able to handle the "max mileage or time listed in your owner's manual" with no problems so I'm going to hold them to it (7500 miles or 1 year)...

Stay toasty out there!
