Was wondering what’s the thickest oil grade you ran in winter? Or summer months. Me, I’ve ran 10w30 HM that was SL rated in winter. In summer it would have been Valvoline Synpower with sodium add pack and 10w30 grade

I ran AMSOIL's 60 weight in my old 91 Jetta diesel once. It was on it's last legs and using oil bad. Didn't help at all. Didn't notice any difference on how it started or ran for that matter.

Usually RGT 5w30 year round. But I did run Motomaster 10w30 full synthetic oil in my F150 for 3 months last summer.

When I was a kid my first car was an 82 Sapporo. I used 20w 50 Valvoline in it because it was racing oil and I drove like a race car driver, made sense to me at the time.

Winters in my area typically get down to 15 degrees F at the coldest, never had a problem.

in 80s VW rabbits, 20W50. Ran that year round.

This was mostly Castrol 20W50 and some Texaco Havoline. Whatever was on sale at the local KMart clones...
Caldor.. Bradlees.. etc. I am dating myself with those references.

15W40 in the ATV and tractor. Probably -20C is about the absolute limit I could start those without some sort of assistance, and usually I try to wait until its -10C to run them. Both start much easier with 5W40 syn. I think my Neon had some 5W40 RT6 for a winter, and it always started down to the mid -20's.
I did start our Tracker when it was almost new down at -36C with conventional 5W30 in it, it sounded pretty terrible for maybe 30 seconds? Then the oil pump was in bypass for maybe a minute more.

Before 0W30 and 5W30, I ran 10W30 and 10W40 year round. IIRC 5W20 was around the same time as 10w30 but only in certain areas and not as popular.

5w-30 Valvoline FS High Mileage with 20% Lucas HD Stabilizer in my Caravan. Won't do that again. Probably made it at least a 15w-40. Still started down to -20F without issues, actually, other than being a tad slow. This was before I realized how much thicker the HD stabilizer made the oil.

Same year around.
Whatever the E46 called for
