For emergency blackout situations, they carry 2 types of portable gensets (biggest being 1500VA; smaller one is 900VA) that can connect to the house's outdoor LPG attachments to keep it going (small appliance, that is).

And if you think they have pretty much figured it out RE: all kinds of portable gennys, think one that runs on butane canister:

I'd definitely like to get my hands on one of these in the near future.....good to have (I use a lot of butane canisters).

There are many other LP gas generators available, and by the way, don't expect to run much on 1500VA. That would run your refrigerator and possibly a few lights, but you can forget about things like a hair drier or space heater running concurrently with the refrigerator.

Definition of "blackout" in Japan differs from the rest of the world: for they ever care for is to power their small appliances, not some power hungry house furnace, A/C units, air-dryer, etc.

Lastly: with most of the electronic devices (switching power supply) now seamlessly supoorts from 100VAC to 240VAC, these gennys will work just fine even with our dell laptop power packs, cell phone chargers, etc.

Half the island runs 50 Hz and the other half, 60. But all are 100 Volts.
