I have lurked around this board long enough to guess what I should do but just need some encouragement. The engine is a 2.7L Toyota, oil has been in since mid Feburary (Mobil 1, 10w-30, NAPA Gold filter)and currently has about 3300 miles on it. In 3 weeks, I am taking a road trip to Tallahasse and am guessing when all is said and done, the roundtrip will put 2000 more miles on the oil. Logic tells me that I should leave well enough alone but the new oil and filter in my garage is speaking to me saying, "put me in before the trip." Overkill and wasteful to change now, right? Right?

Leave it in. That oil is just getting started. I would personally change the filter and top off since it's been six months just to get that "fix"
That you did something.

VSOT strictly for the thickening and relaxation effect

I'll go against the tide on this one and say change it. It's been in service 6 months. If you don't change it that little voice will be saying "wish I'd changed the oil, wish I'd changed the oil..." and your whole trip will be ruined.Enjoy the trip, if you can.

farrarfan1 has an interesting opinion. Consider if you change it now, then you will have a nice jump start on an extended OCI when you get back from your trip.

Yes after the thickening relaxation usually follows.

Don't pullout your dipstick to soon you may get too excited and premature dumping of your oil may occur. If you keep driving you will be surprized how long it will last.

Remember, you can always access the board from remote locations along your trip. We're here to give you the support you need to overcome this crippling affliction.

i have developped the oil change itch too, If I had an excessive amount of money and time, i'd probably work on my car several days a week, changing things, modifying things, upgrading, and i'd probably change the oil once a week.

having just started my 2001 susuki swift on Mobil 1 EP... i'm going to TRY to get myself to hold out till 5-6k on the first interval, but my mind keeps saying "but but, what if the synthetic removes a pile of sludge and gets dirty, what about the filter, but but but, we better change it after 500 miles just to make sure, common, it'll be fun."

eventually i am going to try to push myself to do 8k+ intervals on it, but I don't know if i'll ever be able to get myself to go past 6k. we'll see.

[edit] an oil change is hardly a bank breaking proceedure, even at $5/qt and a really nice filter you're not going to spend more than you would on dinner for 3 people at a restaurant. If it's going to drive you nuts on your trip, change it.

Since you're only at 3,300 miles that'll put you at 5,300 by the ned of your trip...That oil will have no problem handling 5,000 miles, but I wouldn't leave it in much longer than that.

Like bryan said, just change the filter and make top off your oil to the correct level.

Sounds like you enjoy bonding with your vehicle. If this is your only vehicle, change it and go with dino. Change oil every 3k thereafter. If you want to live on the edge and bag bragging rights for pushing the envelope, change the filter every other time (but go ahead and drain/re-fill the filter).

As a wise mother once told her son, "Only permit yourself those follies from which you derive great pleasure".

Footpounds, I know how you feel.
I would be thinking the same thing. So, to have an enjoyable trip and not to be second guessing yourself change it out.
I do the same thing. If I am going on a long trip I always put in new oil. Just make sure you recycle the used oil. It will get used again somewhere down the line.

Leave it. You can do it!!!!!!!! I'd be less concerned especially since your in Texas. You obviously drive short trips but since your in a warm climate, moisture/fuel dilution is likely less an issue and even if it was, 150 miles on the highway would burn it all off.

As your resident Texas therapist, you need to resist the "rush" you get from changing your oil and filter too often. This is your only hope. It will be good for you to go through long withdrawals and change it when you have at least 6,000 miles on the oil.

Put 8 ounces of Valvoline Synpower Oil Treatment (gray 16 oz bottle) in it just prior to leaving. It's nasty-looking, thick & rust-colored. But Boy... does it work good.

Two of us here have recently concluded long, mountainous trips using Mobil-1 10w-30 and VSOT-combined. We both used a whole bottle prior to our trips... but if your cranckcase is about full, use a half-bottle treatment.

What's in there is extra insurance on all the good stuff found in normal analysis like calcium, phosphorous, zinc, moly, boron... etc.

Oh just change it! In the overall scheme of things, it's not that expensive and while you're driving, you can imagine the wonderful goings-on within your engine, secure in the knowledge that your oil is fresh, with plenty of "reserve" for your trip.

Give in!! Change it!!! Use a REALLY BIG filter!!!

As an aside, sometimes I go on long trips just for the express purpose of having an excuse to change my oil and filter.

You did get the change the filter with a "big" filter right though.. That 2.7 Toy truck engine carries nearly 6 quarts as it is.. that oil has it easy.
