There are few sounds as glorious as the song of a V-12!
And they were 3 liter V12s (183 cubic inch). Small bore, short stroke screamers.

Those Gulf liveried Porsches were superb looking machines. Early versions were evil to drive though. Lots off chassis flex. Had to have courage to pilot one of those.

Yes, insane. And device with RECIPROCATING MASS spinning 333 times PER SECOND, firing a cylinder 1,332 times PER SEOND!

Edit: I think the Cosworth of this era was a V10 (not a V8). That would be 1,665 cylinder firings PER SECOND.

Since we're posting engine sounds. Listen to this V12 Alfa, a completely different sound than the V12 Ferraris. The Alfas had a growl, the Ferraris a scream. My wife saw Mario drive this car at the Long Beach Grand Prix in 1983. The gearbox, rear suspension, and wing support look like something from a military war machine.

I'm a fan of V10s myself, both in F1 and sports cars. This thing is nuts:
As a teenager, early 20 something, I would go the the Glen and identify by sound the Ferrari, Alfa, and Matra 12 cylinder engines. Not to mention the bark of the Cosworth V8's. Those were glorious times. And the July 6 hour/Can-Am weekend, was a treat of various cars and sounds.
