But proportional to the velocity squared.

LEOs do not, I repeat do not need the driver's admission of guilt to issue a speeding ticket.

In most cases where you weren't driving recklessy admitting what you did can only help.

Yep. First time I ever got pulled over the state trooper said he's only giving me a warning because I was honest with him.

"I am sure you must have your reason to pull me over" most likely is NOT the correct answer either.

"Officer, my registration is in the glove box. Is it OK for me to open the glove box?" That is the correct response to officer's "do you know why I pulled you over"

... So what's your opinion on the Incorporation Doctrine?

... Circumstances, including how you treat the officer, are crucial to the outcome of a traffic stop.

Yep, once rights have been exercised, and if the drama moves from the side of the road to the hall outside of the courtroom, the lawyer will talk to the cop and make sure he/she is on board with whatever disposition the motorist is hoping for. If they remember motorist as a jerk, it's rarely helpful.

Scott

I am really glad my wife didn't find that out when she got written a [censored] revenue-generation ticket for 26 over (coincidentally more than 25 over means the fine is over $500 and you can't get rid of the points by going to traffic school) when she was still accelerating from a stop and was under the speed limit at the time. The officer did not do any of the usual "do you know how fast you're going?" BS, admonish her for driving so recklessly, or anything like that. Pretty much the only thing he said was "I'm writing you a ticket for 76 in a 50." Maybe he thought a 20-something woman in a car made last millennium was going to be easy money and not going to fight it? Or maybe he realized that the ticket was complete BS from the start because we contested it by mail and won by default because he didn't bother to file a response.

I strongly urge anyone who likes to travel at higher speeds to invest in a radar detector. My Escorts over the years have saved me so much hassle.

This. My Passport 8500 x50 has served me well, and has way better range than my previous Cobra.

I dunno, I've done well w/o a detector, seems like instant on and laser made it unlikely to beat a ticket. I've heard of troopers who would be more likely to hand out tickets if they saw a detector on the dash too.

26 years and two stops for speeding, one a warning and the other not even that much. Pays to know the area and to pay attention. And to not bother when you aren't sure if you can get away with it (no one else on the road but plenty of hiding places).

Around here 20 over isn't that big of a deal (likely to get a ticket at that speed, but 15 over on the highway? no one cares).

Mine spared me tonight from a Delaware state trooper. He got the guy behind me.

Even when they get you with instant on or whatever, it's nice to know I've been hit so I can decide instantly what I want to do.
