The Bizarre Behavior of Rotating Bodies, Explained

Thanks for this. I‘d observed this phenomenon as a knucklehead kid tossing things into the air years ago, but never thought about the fact that the physics behind why this occurs are highly complicated and hard to describe!

Very interesting video - thanks for posting! This reminded me of a weird novel I read back in the late '80s, The Hab Conspiracy, in which it's discovered that every few thousand years the weight of the polar ice caps builds up until the Earth flips 90°, putting the ice caps where the equator used to be, and vice versa. Of course this leads to a massive extinction of life, and explains the frozen dinosaurs under the ice in Greenland, etc.

When I was in high school, one of my classmates discovered that if he tried to spin his class ring like a top on a table with the setting---the heavy side---on bottom, it would invariably flip itself over to spin with the setting on top. Then it was stable until it stopped and fell over. Why?
