I am sure this has been covered, but I was wondering what is THE BEST oil to use for my 1.8T 05 GLI? It seems like everyone has something different to suggest, but I want to know which oil is hands down THE BEST?

The only way to determine the "best" oil for your engine and driving style will be to try several of the top oils and do a UOA on them.

Nearly all oil is decent, best can be defined in many ways. You only have a limited subset of oil to pick from while under warranty anyway that meets VW spec.

I think these are the best candidates from their respective formulators for the 1.8T or new 2.0L direct injection, VW/Audi turbos - any of them will give you excellent service:

Mobil Delvac 1, 5w-40
Amsoil Series 3000, 5w-30
Redline 10w-30
GC, 0w-30
Royal Purple 10w-30
Synergyn 3w-30

You'll note that all of these are PAO/Ester based lubricants and their are NO SAE 0w-40's or 5w-50's on this list. The issue here is that the "wide range" multigrades will shear significantly in turbo applications, due to their high polymer content. In addition, these degraded polymers will lead indirectly to ring sticking and varnish deposits.

You'll also note that most of these are 30wt oils and not 40wt oils. High rpm engines generally perform best with slightly thinner oils and these will reduce your peak oil temps as well. I see no reason to use an SAE 5w-40 in the 1.8L engine, provided your 30wt oil meets the ACEA "A3/B4" specifications.
