Define "best". Best price? Best for long drain intervals? Best for extreme cold? Best for extreme heat? Best for towing in the desert? Best for a gas engine? Best for a diesel? Best for a turbo? The only way to know whats best for a specific car is to do some oil analysis and have them interpreted correctly. If you don't know what oil to start with, use the manufacturers recommendations for viscosity grade and drain intervals. Then do some oil analyses.

Like he said depdns on a LOT of factors. Like what kind of car/truck, milage, way its driven, turbo or not, price, etc.... I like Mobil1 10W30 year round myself, and use Mobils Drive Clean Plus 10W30 in my old car.

With that long of a list it becomes a philosophical question. And I don't even think a few UOA's will yield a single winner.....and as Dave C4 pointed out define wiener.

The oil you like purchasing the best and makes you feel best. Personally I think that any manuf. speced quality oil(dino or synthetic) will have your engine last much longer than the vehicle it sits in.

wow, logic....now, we'll have none of that here! Like the coworker whose husband insists on buying diesel 4x4 pickup trucks (and makes the wife drive it). He says "that engine will last a million miles". but the truck will be a rust bucket in less than 100k. They've only had it a few months and it's been in the shop more than my 162k mile toyota has since I bought it. (but my camry has a tough time towing 24' trailers...) Besides, he's never kept one over 2 years anyway!

They're all "good", you'd just have to group them by type and viscosity. The 50 weights better than 30 weights and the Group V ones better than Group IV or III for protection and longer OCI's.

Simple question, complex answers. Based on limited knowlege my pick would be..... Mobil 1 0 W-40 [Patriot] [Patriot] [Patriot] ACEA A3,B3, Starburst, and BMW LL specs. Any way you slice it, I don't see how this could be a bad pick for your climate.

If you get a good answer, let me know. I can't figure this stuff out. I bought a 2002 VW Eurovan (2.8 V6) new and have used Mobil 1 5-30 from the beginning because it met the requirement and I could buy it at Costco. But with all the info here, I wonder whether or not there is a better choice (M1 0-40, 5-40; Castrol 5-40 - which all get good reviews). I change my oil every 5K (VW requirement). I get a good balance of highway and stop-go driving. I've since bought a new Passat TDI. Thank God you can only use two oils in it - makes the decision easy. But I got introduced to Motul oils which sound excellent as well. Since I'm going to buy Motul oil on-line for my Passat, I'm wondering whether I should have them send me the appropriate one for my Eurovan in the same box. [I dont know] In the end, I just want these cars to last for a long time so I don't mind getting what's best. As I said before, I'd like to know what the thoughts are out there.

Well, lets try to break this down. Performance and protection go hand in hand. A3 rated oils "perform and protect" better than A1 or A5 oils. So that leaves us with: 2)Mobil1 0w-40 (A3/B3/B4) 3)Mobil1 5w-50 (A3/B3/B4) 4)Motul 8100 E-Tech 0w-40 (A3/B3/B4) 7)Motul 8100 X-Cess 5w-40 (A3/B3/B4)Group3+PAO 9)Fuchs Titan 5w-40 (API SM Group 3(A3/B3/B4) 10)Castrol Formula R 0w-40 (PAO A3/B3/B4) 11)Castrol Formula R 5w-30 (Group3 A3/B3/B4) 12)Shell Helix Ultra(Group3 A3/B3/B4) And since PAOs are "better" than Group 3 oils, that leaves us with: 2)Mobil1 0w-40 (A3/B3/B4) 3)Mobil1 5w-50 (A3/B3/B4) 4)Motul 8100 E-Tech 0w-40 (A3/B3/B4) 10)Castrol Formula R 0w-40 (PAO A3/B3/B4) Since I'm not sure if Motul 8100 is PAO, I'll strike it out just to be safe. 2)Mobil1 0w-40 (A3/B3/B4) 3)Mobil1 5w-50 (A3/B3/B4) 10)Castrol Formula R 0w-40 (PAO A3/B3/B4) Thinner oils tend to cause less noise, so strike out 3). 2)Mobil1 0w-40 (A3/B3/B4) 10)Castrol Formula R 0w-40 (PAO A3/B3/B4) And since I don't like Castrol's liberal use of the term "synthetic", I'll strike it out. 2)Mobil1 0w-40 (A3/B3/B4) So there you have it. Mobil 1 0w40 is the "best" oil.

Thank you C4Dave. Motul 8100 E-Tech 0w-40 is PAO+Ester,8100 X-Cess 5w-40 PAO+Group3 blend but this oil GM LL B 025 rated so can go up to 50000km oil change interval in New opel vectra ZC diesels. Mobil1 0w-40 has both GM LL A 025 and GM LL B 025 approval(30000/50000km oil change intervals) Mobil1 0w-40 is the best oil as you said unless Motul 0w-40 better.
