"The 2022 Subaru WRX Is So Good It’s Almost Boring"

“So good it might be boring” This is a problem with most cars today. They make them so polished and perfect that they no longer have any character. Just bland, fast appliances. Looking at you Tesla.

This is why older “super” cars without 15 computers keeping you safe and manual transmissions are sky rocketing in price.

They said the same thing about the R35 GTR. Now somebody made it un-boring (somehow) and added 2000hp.

Agreed.

While the practical side of me likes the idea of a turbo’d awd sedan, I would way rather just drive my truck or Lexus GX in bad weather and get a rwd something or other with a manual. My GTO was so much more fun to drive than my Legacy GT even though the Legacy probably would have been faster around a track.

They are now absolutely the slowest vehicle in the left lane, and bunch of them. I thought that trophy will stay forever in the hands of Camry/Avalon, but Subaru managed to take it.
IMO, serious achievement.
Well yeah… any faster and the CVT will grenade 😉 They need to take a lesson from the Altima drivers.

That plastic is dumb and I hate it. And it'll look like trash before you know it. The plastic cladding on these Subarus is of such poor quality that you can see the waves from the injection moulding process.
The plastic cladding on ANY vehicle that has it is ugly...unfortunately, it's almost impossible to buy a vehicle made within the last 10 years that doesn't have it...

The difference is in the quality.

The cladding on a year old Subaru looks like white and gray tiger stripes. Other makes are not as bad and it's silly to pretend otherwise.

Maybe the new one is uglier, but IMO, all plastic trim is ugly. I think need to go back to just having all metal fenders all the way around. That didn't look cheap like the plastic does...

So, to stiffen up the chassis, they added spot welds and better adhesive? Now that's engineering on a budget!
They spent a billion on the global platform. Its pretty impressive. I have the platform on the '19 Crosstrek. They pretty much wrote the book on safety and this is another first. Pretty much an enclosed steel passenger compartment cage that serves all their lines. The first year of the small overlap crash test every one of their car lines aced the test. No manufacture came close. The '18 Crosstrek/impreza with the new global platform received the highest european crash test rating up to that time. I hope folkes contine to hate on Subaru so they are not in too high a demand. ;)

But they shot Novocaine into the suspension.
No fun here; Rally car-ness in base models is gone, I test drove three different Impreza MT from 5 door to 4 door.
All steered poorly, though they were quieter and a bit less "jiggly". And Less Fun.
And two had loud engine knock right out of the box. Thus the Ford in my signature.

Regulars Subaru used to have GREAT steering response and good ePS tuning for a strut car. No longer.

I tried ... I tried.

I wish VW put some quality control in its suspension coil springs. No fun having a rear spring snap on a NEW car and dart you off towards the guardrail at 75MPH. That is a bit too much excitement for me. Especially when you cant see out the rear window due to poorly conceived body architecture of its share platform.

Now the appearance of improperly maintained body cladding on a subaru seems secondary.

Wait Now wheel bearings are failing on some VW ...

Snapped springs are not exclusive to VW.

Not are issues with suppliers providing substandard parts.
