I've been on 13.2.9 for like half a year now, and have got very used to it. I use it almost every time I drive, for almost the entire drive, including long drives to visit family as well as a NorCal to SoCal road trip. It was generally very, very smooth and pleasant, but at the same time, even in the "Hurry" profile, I felt it was too shy in some cases and just generally too slow overall. I mean, driving like a grandma is great if that's what you like, but most humans don't actually drive like that.
I had very little major issues with it - the biggest issues I ever had with FSD was lane selection. Think going in a right turn lane when it was supposed to go straight, then sitting there with the left signal on, hesitating, even when the driver behind was patient and left room. Or, the opposite, going in a left turn only lane then just going straight with no hesitation and no turn signal and cutting everyone off. I haven't used the new version enough to see if this issue is resolved, but based on reports from influencers/testers that received the update before I did, that issue is mostly resolved.
Anyway, I got v14.1.3 last night and tried it for the first time this morning.
So far, it's just overall much quicker. It's less smooth, but it's also far more realistic and how I would actually drive. It brakes hard, quickly, then accelerates rapidly. I tried Standard, Hurry, and Mad Max profiles and with all of them, the maneuvers and braking was much quicker. I will say the difference between profiles is much more noticeable than before, but even Standard was pretty aggressive. I'd say the new Standard is like the old Hurry. it's not rude though - like, even in Mad Max, it let a car turn in that was coming out of a parking lot.
It's worth noting that there is no longer a way to cap the speeds. I believe going into the Sloth profile will limit you to exactly the speed limit or below, but that's not what I want - I would like it to keep pace with the speed of traffic, but give me the option to limit the top speed (this is how it was before). There is a lot of construction in our area, and I don't see any way to cap the speed to 55 in construction zones like I could before. I haven't actually tried it yet, but I may have to take over in a situation like that. We shall see.
Something I noticed is that it is far more reactive to objects or things it sees, and it notices way more stuff than it did before. Before, it would happily run over roadkill or potholes. Now, it will quickly swerve around stuff. That is both good and bad. This morning, for example, an older car was parked on the side of the road, and a huge cloud of steam was coming out of the tailpipe. Instead of just driving through the steam, with no warning, it swerved around the steam, using part of the oncoming lane. There was nobody coming, so that wasn't unsafe, but it's just weird... I am sure v13 would not have done that.
Parking lots are way better now. Before, it hated parking lots of any kind, and would just either creep through super slow or just stop over and over again for no reason. Now, it is confident. Not too fast to the point of being unsafe, but it seems to have found a good middle ground between so slow it's annoying and too fast to be safe. So I'm happy about that.
It also has a bunch more options for parking at destinations. It'll automatically guess if you want parking lot, street or driveway, and then you can change it. You can see on the map in real time as you get near your destination where it will go. For example, I put in a local cafe this morning that has only street parking and a drive-thru. There is a parking lot across the street. It had defaulted to parking lot, and on the nav, I could see it was routing to the parking lot across the street. I changed it to driveway (even though the establishment does not technically have a driveway) and it correctly went into the area where one lane is the drive-thru and one is a different business. It unfortunately did start trying to go into the other business, not the drive-thru, but I don't blame it for that. At that point I took over and corrected it. Then, when we went home from there, it had automatically selected driveway, and indeed, pulled into my driveway. I do have to park in reverse in a certain spot in our driveway for the charger to reach and for all our vehicles to fit, and I don't know how to customize that, so I did have to re-park. Maybe the option to back-in will come soon? Still cool that it correctly identifed my home location has a driveway and parked in it - before, with v13, it would just stop on the street in front of my driveway and put itself in Park.
Overall, I am positive about the update, and think it's generally much more realistic to how the average person drives. I do wish that they had kept the feature to cap the speed manually at any given time, but I will continue to experiment with the profiles and see how it goes.
Anyone else get the new update and try it? What are your thoughts?
PS: I think they are going to rebrand Full Self Driving to Tesla Self Driving or just Self Driving soon. Many places where it said Full Self Driving before just say Self Driving in the interface. It still says Full Self Driving (Supervised) in several places. Just, an assumption I'm making based on the UI changes in the update and some rumors I've heard online.
