I don't even know who to believe these days ... litigation-thirsty folks going after Big Corp, Big Corp involved in coverup or Big Corp paying the $16.5 million to maintain good PR.

Perhaps they wanted to be involved in the suit in case OTHER FINDINGS were revealed as part of the case. You're either in or out. Since they may not know all the facts, best to be "in"
